My great grandfather was William CANNON. He was born in London/Middlesex
C1854. He and his first wife/partner had three children, Elizabeth, Harriet
and Walter. He later married my great grandmother and on their marriage
certificate he is listed as a widower. He and my great grandmother, Mary
Ann DRAKE/BUTLER/CANNON had two children and they were all were living with
Mary Ann's father, John DRAKE, in Normanton, Yorkshire in 1891. William
married Mary Ann in 1890 and the two children were born in 1892/3 and 1896.
The child born in 1896 was my grandfather, Joseph CANNON.
However, by 1901 Mary Ann DRAKE/BUTLER/CANNON had reverted to the name of
her first husband, John BUTLER who had died in 1889. She was working as a
servant/housekeeper. The two children (I have my grandfather's birth
certificate and his name is Joseph CANNON) were also identified as Agnes
Hannah BUTLER and Joseph BUTLER.
There is absolutely no sign of William CANNON or his three children in the
1901 census. I do not think he died as that would not cause my
greatgrandmother to revert to the BUTLER name. (I do believe that William
may have abandoned my greatgrandmother and the two children they had
together.) This is confirmed somewhat when a relative came upon some papers
regarding my grandfather and he was very upset and embarrassed.
I considered that William CANNON may have left the country (or simply
changed their names!). I have looked at the U.S. census' but cannot make a
match. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Fingers crossed
Valerie
