Dear Janice,
THANK YOU for your thoughtfulness in replying. Actually, at this point, I
cannot add anything to your discussion abt this family. I started
researching abt 2-3 years ago to honor the memory of my husband's family.
My husband's line of Cannons comes from John Cannon/Martha. I had
considerable difficulty accepting, as a beginner in research, the inf I had
read abt the birth year and place of our John Cannon. After intense effort,
I found the family listed in BALTIMORE COUNTY FAMILIES 1659-1759, page 92.
I shared the inf from the article in attempts to assist. Last summer, my
husband and I visited the library in Myrtle Beach SC, and I found the
following inf. At this time, I did not have the article referred to and did
not know if there was a connection to my husband's CANNON line. MARRIAGES
and DEATH NOTICES from THE CHARLESTON TIMES 1800-1821, page 48

inst., John Cannon age 83 native of Maryland last 60 years a
citizen of SC supported his country in late revolution resided greater
part of his time in District of Orangeburg" Also, the article I shared inf
from, reads, "the South Carolin Gazette of October 5, 1802 contains notice
of Daniel Cannon's death with long eulogy of him....he was married twice and
had a large family" The HAPPY Heritage is quoted as the source.

Fran, this reply is very delayed but have not been able to spend time at my
computer. This is in reference to some of the info that you sent me from
an
article you received from someone else....
Re: it was stated that the SC CANNONs stem from the famous Daniel CANNON
of
Charleston, SC. I have done extensive research on him and corresponded
with
researchers and no one has ever found that he left any male descendants.
There
is some confusion over a grandson named Daniel Cannon WEBB. His will
appoints his daughter Martha as executrix.
Have you found information that contradicts this? I am most interested in
anything that can be found.
The CANNON lines that come from Newberry Co., SC are from John CANNON, who
was the earliest land grant recipient in SC.....actually predates Daniel in
Charleston by 8 years. There is an early research work "Annals of
Newberry" by
Summers that claims this Newberry John was the "son of an Irishman who
settled
in the southern part of the state".
Well, OK, if that is true then the Chrlstn Daniel and Newberry John would
have to be brothers (not father and son).....because John is married with
several
children when he gets his 1750 grant and Daniel, on the other hand, is in
his
second marriage with only one child when he gets his grant in 1758. Now
this
is not telling us whether Daniel had money to start with and just bought
land
instead of applying for a grant. We know that he was very prosperous and
big
in politics, etc.
Some have attached the Chrlstn Daniel to a Daniel CANNON in VA and they
have
this Daniel as being born there. He us supposed to have had two sons that
he
brought to SC......I don't have any documents to prove or disprove this
origin. Just names.
I would like to hear your opinion on this and if you can shed any more
light.
much thanks, Janice (Cannon)
