Jim,
Try going back to the 1820 TN census to see which Cannons are there.
Likely one of these is James' father. James and Juretta ? Cannon of
Laurens, SC. (my second great grandparents) had a son named James who served
in the Civil War possibly in Charleston and later moved to Kentucky or
Tennessee. He was born abt 1833 in Laurens Co., SC. So the age wouldn't be
right for being your James. I haven't been able to find anything on him,
except that he was in Laurens in 1850, in the Civil War in the early 1860s
and doesn't show up in SC after that.

My gg grandfather, James L. CANNON, is shown in the 1850 census for
Gibson
County, Tennessee. It shows him as 35 years old at the time and born in
Tennessee. I have yet to figure out who his parents were and am looking
forward to the day when that mystery in solved. There were other CANNONs
in the 1850 Gibson County census.
