Hi, everyone, for those of you who have shown interest in this question as
to whether or not there were two Samuel Cannons circa 1753-1756 here is
something I found at the library today.
taken from SC Journals dated Tuesday A.M. 5 November 1754
"The Humble Petition of Samuel Cannon setting forth That he hath a wife for
whom with himself he never has obtained any warrant or Grant of Land, prays
to lay out 100 acres on or near Santee or the Waters thereof and that he may
have a grant for the same. The prayer thereof was granted".
All the entrees on this and other pages show that the petitioners were giving
a description of household like himself, a wife, two children, etc....giving
the number of "heads" to qualify for the size of grant he was asking for.
Are we safe then in assuming that this SAMUEL CANNON, in this petition is
just a wife and himself?
I didn't find the same kind of research done for NC petitions, but the SAMUEL
CANNON who was granted on the Tyger River, Anson, Co. NC rec'd 240 acres in
1753.
Does anyone know if the land grant head count qualification was different for
NC in 1753? And by stating that he had never yet obtained any warrant or
Grant of Land...could he be referring to SC only, and his land in NC didn't
disqualify him from entering this petition????
I also read that 2 years were required before you could quit rent and get
another piece of land.
Thanks for all your interest and help in this!!
Janice (Cannon)
