Janice,
John Cannon was in Montgomery County, IL by 1835, but I am not able to
look him up in the 1830 census because I don't have that resource. He
bought his first piece of property in Montgomery County, IL Sept. 25, 1835,
one week after William Cannon bought property out of the same land office
for the same county. John then bought property on Dec. 2, 1839 in
Montgomery County, IL in the Edwardsville, IL land office. William Cannon
bought land on the same day for the same county, and in the same land office
and Robert Cannon also visited the same land office, on the same day,
buying property in neighboring Macoupin County.
There is a John Cannon in the same county, division/township not listed,
for the 1840 census. He is illiterate and lives with 1 female 0-5, 1 female
5-10, 1 female 10-15, and one more 30-40. He is the only male, 30-40. John
happens to live next door to a William Loving who may be the 60-70 year old
illiterate male.
John is not in the 1850 Montgomery County census, but there is a Miley
Cannon, 50 years old and born in North Carolina, living with a 16-year old
Louisa born in Illinois. I am not sure where he went from there. I suppose
that "Miley" could be "Milly" but that's a stretch. (More on
Milly below).
I am not able to find him in Montgomery, Greene, Macoupin, or Bond Counties.
All but Greene border Montgomery County.
There is a John Cannon, who married a Milly Hardin, April 7, 1830 in
Montgomery County, IL.
There is an Millie Cannon, no John (deceased?) age of 64 and born in
South Carolina living with a Mary Griffith, born in Kentucky, + children
born in Illinois. Millie is listed as the head of the house, and there are
no adult men.
