I have been looking for the family of Jane Cannon for years and think there
might be a connection to John O. Cannon (b 9 Sep 1803 in NC--d 1846 in Bradley
Co. TN). John married Caroline Nelson in 1829. She died in 1839 and he
married his second wife, Mahala Torbett 1 Oct 1840.
The record shows that John served in the Tennessee House 22nd General
Assembly 1837-1839, and was a Democrat. He was elected Judge of the 3rd Judicial
Circuit in 1844 and served until his death in 1846.
My gt-gt grandmother Jane Cannon (b 1833) was reputed to have been from a
family who lived near Chattanooga, and her father was supposed to have been a
member of the Tennessee legislature according to stories passed on in the family
for several generations. I am theorizing that if this scenario fits, Jane
would have lost her mother when she was a child of six, and her father by the
time she was thirteen. I haven't been able to locate her in the 1850 cenus, but
that might be explained if she went to live with other family members rather
than remaining with her step-mother. She married Abraham Fine in Washington
Co., TN in 1854 and lived there for the rest of her life. She died sometime
after 1904.
I would be very grateful for any information about John O. Cannon, especially
the names of his children. (A Bible record or copy of his will would be a
godsend, but anything will do.) So far I have found names of two sons from his
first marriage and one from his second; unfortunately, it is often more
difficult to trace the names of female family members.
Hope someone out there can help me.
