I've "rescued" three old photographs which all appear to belong to the
CANNAN or CANNAAN Family of East Martinsburg, New York. The first is a
photograph of Mr. James CANNAAN of East Martinsburg, NY which was taken at
the Beach Studio in Lowville, NY. I'd guess that the photograph was taken
in the early 1900's and that James was in his 50's at the time.
The second photograph is of Mrs. James CANNAAN of East Martinsburg, NY.
This photograph was taken at the Slocum Studio in Lowville, NY probably in
the 1880's with Mrs. CANNAAN appearing to be in her 30's at the time. The
third photograph is identified as Master Fredrick CANNAN of East
Martinsburg, NY. This photograph looks to have been taken in the 1880's or
1890's with young Fredrick likely about 4 years old at the time.
Based on limited research I do find record of James CANNAN living in Watson,
NY during the 1880 census, a Teamster by trade living in the household of
John & Mary A. GORMAN. James is noted as age 25 and born in MY to Irish
born parents. A fourth photograph including the same handwriting is of Miss
Julia FITZGERALD of Kentucky and was taken at the Timmermans Studio in St.
Paul, Minnesota.
I've no idea how they might be related but the handwritten notations on all
were certainly made by the same hand. I'm hoping to locate someone from
this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the
care of family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who
might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
