Keowee Courier, Wednesday, July 30, 1930 edition (Oconee Co., SC)
JOHN W. CANNON, 89 YEARS OF AGE,
Passed Away at His Home at Salem Last Sunday Night - Confederate Veteran
and Good Citizen.
John W. Cannon, aged and highly respected citizen of Oconee, Confederate
veteran and last
survivor of Company C, Orr's Regiment of Rifles, a command noted
throughout the War Between
The States, died at his home near Salem last Sunday night at 9 o'clock.
He had been in declining
health for some time, yielding to the infirmities of age, but physically
well up to a brief period before his death. He was the oldest of three
brothers --- all veterans of the Civil War --- the survivors being J. M.
Cannon, 86 years of age, of Bowersville, Ga., and Silas K. Cannon, 84,
of Lavonia, Ga.
Mr. Cannon figured quite prominently in the affairs of his community and
county. He was at one
time a County Commissioner, for years a member of the county Board of
Registration and also
chairman of the Oconee Pension Board. He was long a consistent member of
the Salem Methodist
Church. In the home he was an ideal husband and father, in the community
a worthy and upright
citizen.
His passing came but a short while after the celebration of his 89th
birthday, at which time the
family reunion was held (July 12th), when he was one of the most jovial
of the large number who
participated in this celebration. In his death a good man has been
called to his reward, and many
there are who feel genuine sorrow at his passing.
Mr. Cannon is survived by a large family, of whom are named four
daughters - Mrs. Ella Whitmire, at home; Mrs. D. E. Crenshaw, of this
county; Mrs. Lydie Kelly, of Greenville, and Miss Nancy Cannon, at home;
five sons, John W., Jr., and Alex Cannon, of Salem; Warren R. Cannon,
of Marysville, Texas; James P. Cannon, of Salem, and Will M. Cannon, of
Senca; two brothers, S. K. Cannon, of Lavonia, Ga., and J. M. Cannon, of
Bowersville, Ga.; one half brother, Thomas Cannon, of Seneca, and three
half-sisters, Mrs. Ervin Powell, of Oconee County; Mrs. Sallie Bell of
Pickens County, and Mrs. Ruth Golden, of Seneca.
Funeral services were held from the Salem Methodist Church Tuesday
morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. Q. E. Gunter and Rev. P. E. Burts
officiating. A large congregation was present at the church, and the
body was lowered to the grave in the presence of many sorrowing
relatives and friends.
