I don't know at this point if she is the same Parthenia CANNON
I'm looking for.
All I know for sure is that a girl named Theney (or Parthenia),
about 12 years old, was kidnapped and held by the Kickapoo
Indians for 6 mos-5 years. I have found about 15 accounts of the
incident and the only thing they agree on was that 12-yr-old Theney
was popular with the Indians while in captivity. One account shows
her as a granddaughter/daughter of William and Abarella (Williams)
CANNON. William and his sons, John and Samuel, were
massacred. Abarella, Theny and James Stark (William's son-in-
law) were taken captive. Several accounts mention that William
CANNON and his family were moving from Indiana to Wabash Co.,
IL, when the incident took place.
William CANNON was a brother of James CANNON,
revolutionary war veteran from Newberry Co., SC. "The CANNON
BOOK" by Clarence CANNON mentions William and the incident
but doesn't give any details.
This Thena certainly is the right age.
I found a Parthenia CANNON who married a Merritt Meacham
on December 1823 in Todd Co., KY. She is the Parthenia listed in
the LDS search as a daughter of William and Arabella. However, I
haven't been able to find where they settled.
I'm looking for descendents that may have an oral history of the
incident (or preferably first-person written accounts). Any further
information would be helpful. I will follow up research on this
Thena. Perhaps she is the one I'm looking for.
I'm descended from brother, James CANNON, but this incident
has me intrigued. I'd like to find enough verifiable background to
clear up all of the misinformation that has been written about the
massacre and captivity.
