Hi Linda,
I have noticed your correspondence about our ever-elusive Jane Cannon. I am
descended from Rivanna's line->Rivanna m Moore Strickland-->Virginia
"Virgie"
m Alf Taylor Buck-->Opal, my mom (who is now 95 and experiencing some memory
problems).
Hi Carol :o)
That means Abraham FINE and Jane CANNON are the great-great grandparents of
both you and my dad. :o)
A while ago when Mother's memory was sharp she recounted the
information about Jane being a midwife and herbalist and all the events of
the
Civil War when the home was vandalized and burned. My grandmother,
Virgie, grew
up living across the way from her grandmother, Jane, and spent a lot of time
with her, so the things Mother was told were from her mother, Virgie.
I believe this is a reliable source then. There are a lot of things my
great grandmother told me about her life and her daughter told me even more
about my great-grandparents and I know what you mean. :o)
I am pretty sure I know how the Buchanan/Cannon confusion developed.
When
cousin Jack Strickland (now deceased) began researching the family in the
early
1970's he contacted my mother's sister, Iona, who still lived in Johnson City
at the time. Iona was the one who thought Jane must have been a Buchanan
....One of the last times I saw my aunt (in 1986 before her death in ' 87)
she admitted that the proof was overwhelming that Jane was a Cannon,
but her parting comment was "There were Cannons and
Buchanans in the family......"
And then there are those on the CANNON list who say the CANNONs and the
BUCHANONs married into each other! LOL! Do you know where it's coming from
that Jane CANNON's father was a Pete CANNON?
Concerning the missing Robert A. Fine, son of Allen B. Fine--there was
a
notice in the Jonesboro/Jonesborough (TN) Herald and Tribune which
accounts for
what happened to him......
This is a great help - thank you! I am still confused about the names to
how it seems we have left over names of A. B.'s children. I can't remember
the details without my notes, but there are still some mismatches between
the obituary of A. B. and the census for his family. I'm sure we'll get it
figured out.
Concerning Jacob FINE--the same newspaper published an article about
his
death.
VOL. XXVIII #46, Wed., Mar 9, 1898
In Memorium: Jacob FINE was born March 14, 1827; died Nov. 25. 1897. He was
an immediate descendant of one of the pioneers of our county, and the last
survivior of a numerous family.
I really appreciate all this great information, Carol - thank you!
Linda
