Hello Linda, My name is Gladys. I am searching for my great Grandfather,
James Cannon, and so far no luck, so those relatives are pretty elusive
sometimes. I don't think it is so unusual that you don't know anything about your
great grandparents. Keep trying, eventually you will start learning and be able
to add more. That's the way genealogy is.
I found some of the info that you want. According to the Household
Record on the Latter Day Saints Website - Census record, Jane was born in TN,
her mother and father were both born in NC.
I believe her father's name was Pete Cannon, but I haven't been able
to find anything on him. There is a good bit on Abraham Fine on
Ancestry.com.
If you are a subscriber, check his name and then go to one that has the
ahnentafel chart. If you don't have Ancestry, it might be on
Roots.com.
I can't find much about Jane's background, but she must have been an
interesting person. One record says that she was very knowledgeable about
herbal medications. It seems there home burned after a robbery, and later she went
to help a woman who was having a baby and noticed that the quilt on the bed
was one of Janes. She wondered if the woman was involved.
My guess is that she was a midwife. My personal observation is that
Jane was an admirable person, to help someone she suspected as an accomplice to
those who had robbed her. You can be proud of her.
I hope this is helpful. If I can be of any more assistance, let me
know. If you happen on to anything about a James Cannon from WV, born about
1834, wife was Catherine VanHorn, I would love to hear about it.
Good Luck,
Gladys
