Descendants of James Cannon
Generation No. 1
1. JAMES3 CANNON (ABRAHAM S.2, JAMES1)1 was born 1808 in Dayton, Ohio, and
died October 19, 1889 in LaPort Co., Indiana. He married (1) NANCY HARDESTY
August 12, 1825 in Shelby Co., OH. She was born 1803 in VA. He married (2)
MARY (POLLY) JACKSON December 23, 1830 in Sidney, Shelby Co., Ohio. She was
born April 29, 1813 in Boonesboro, KY, and died 1850 in LaPort Co., Indiana.
Notes for JAMES CANNON:
The following information is according to the article, "The Cannon's"
written by Denise K. Mahan Moore of Gautier, MS-March 27, 1980.
According to the article, "The Cannon's" written by Denise K. Mahan Moore
of
Gautier, MS-March 27, 1980---"James Cannon and Mary Jackson were the parents
of 10 children, seven sons and 3 daughters."
-------------------------------------------------------------
Below information is sent by Don Cannon and was obtained from the Sept. 24,
1850 census taken in Cass Twp., LaPorte Co., IN. Census Reel #157, page
#318B.
Along with the 2 parents and 8 children listed in James household, there was
the name of LYDIA ANN FARRINGTION 16yrs old born in PA. This is an unknown
person. Was she family? More probably she was a nanny or housekeeper as was
common in those days.
There is also a Christian Richmond (Male) 2yo born in IN listed as living in
the household during the 1850 census. Who is this??
-----------------------------------------------------------
According to the marriage records from Shelby Co., James and Nancy
"Hardesty" were married 8-12-1825 (by john McClur, JP bk 1&2 pg 2a). James
and Mary Jackson were married 12-23-1830 (by Jonathan Nichols, JP bk 1&2 pg
48b). Were James, Nancy and Mary (Polly) Cannon involved in a polygomous
marriage. I'm beginning to wonder. Note when James and Polly's children were
born. Polly died in 1850 but census records show Nancy still with James in
1860, 1870, and 1880. Very interesting.
(Per Don Cannon) According to the 1870 and 1880 census' James wife was Nancy
(72 years in 1880-b: 1808) of Canada. Since Mary (Polly) Jackson died in
1850-It can be concluded that James remarried. Or, did James and Polly
divorce and he remarried Nancy (in 1825) prior to Polly's death. Did James
and Nancy have children? It is all so confusing.
1860 Mich City, Starke Co. census shows James, 52y with wife Nancy 51y. The
1860 census shows Henry J. 23y living with John H. 21y, Simeon D. 20y,
Richard 19y, Shelby Y. 16y, James Sani and twin Emily 19y and Olivea 14y all
living next door to James Cannon and (2nd) wife Nancy. Are James, Emily and
Olivea Nancy's children from a previous marriage? According to the June 22,
1860 LaPorte Co., census--James (age 52) was a Farmer in OH. Also listed in
the household were Nancy (51y) VA, Henry J. (23y), John H. (21y), Simeon
(20y), Richard (19y), and Shelby Y (16y)--all farmers in Ohio.
In the 1870 census, their are four HATHAWAY'S living with James and Nancy,
as is a son, Shelby F(?). Cannon age 27 (b: abt 1843). Was HATHAWAY Nancy's
1st married name? These Hathaway's just keep showing up with the Cannon's
all over the place! This leads to the question, was Nancy's "maiden" name
really "Hardesty?" Could it be a typo in the records? Could "Hathaway"
be a
"typo" in the census records.
In the 1880 census; Davis, Starke, IN James is 72yrs, Nancy is 72yrs-Shelby
F. is no longer in the household, one HATHAWAY teen remains there. Are
these Nancy's children by a previous marriage?

The below is contributed by Richard Cannon of Cape Giardeau, MO-acquaintance
through the internet. He says, "although dates and stories aren't all
confirmed," he compiled them from many sources, one of which is, "Kinfolk
Review" published by Phillip Gardner of Broken Bow, Nebraska.
"James Cannon-the oldest son of Abraham and Nancy, was raised by an Uncle,
Richard M. Cannon in IN after the death of his father in 1825"
Notes for NANCY HARDESTY:
Was Nancy's 1st married name Hathaway?
Children of JAMES CANNON and MARY JACKSON are:
i. GEORGE W.4 CANNON, b. Abt. 1832, OH.
ii. WILLIAM CANNON, b. Abt. 1833, OH.
Notes for WILLIAM CANNON:
Per Don Cannon, the 1860 cinsus shoes a William Cannon, 26y of OH and wife
Mary E 25y of IN. Children are listed as George H. 3y and Anna J. 2 y---It
is not verified that this is "our" William Cannon.
iii. HENRY J. (L.?) CANNON, b. July 4, 1836, Indiana; d. December 18, 1882,
Shelby Co. Ohio; m. EMMA F. GOMM, 1877; b. October 4, 1837, London, England;
d. December 18, 1882, Shelby Co. Ohio.
Notes for HENRY J. (L.?) CANNON:
The 1860 census shows Henry J. 23y living with John H. 21y, Simeon D. 20y,
Richard 19y, Shelby Y. 16y, James Sani and twin Emily 19y and Olivea 14y all
living next door to James Cannon and (2nd) wife Nancy. Are James, Emily and
Olivea Nancy's children from a previous marriage?
Notes for EMMA F. GOMM:
Emma isn't showing on the 1860 census with Henry J. He is shown as follows:
Henry J. 23y living with John H. 21y, Simeon D. 20y, Richard 19y, Shelby Y.
16y, James Sani and twin Emily 19y and Olivea 14y all living next door to
James Cannon and (2nd) wife Nancy. Are James, Emily and Olivea.
2. iv. JOHN H. CANNON, b. March 16, 1838, Porter Co., IN; d. October 31,
1927.
3. v. SIMEON B. CANNON, b. Bet. January 4 1840 - 1841, IN; d. April 2, 1928,
Pemberton, Shelby Co., OH.
vi. RICHARD CANNON, b. Abt. 1843, IN.
vii. SHELBY F.(Y.?) CANNON, b. Abt. 1845, IN.
viii. ELIZABETH C. CANNON, b. Abt. 1847, IN; d. Bef. 1860.
Notes for ELIZABETH C. CANNON:
Elizabeth Cannon is not listed in the 1860 census with her father James,
assumed step-mother Nancy and brothers. If she was born about 1847, that
would put her age at around 13y in 1860 so she would have (probably) been
too young to be out of the household due to marriage. Therefore, I will
assume she was deceased.
ix. ? CANNON, b. Unknown.
x. ? CANNON, b. Unknown.
Generation No. 2
2. JOHN H.4 CANNON (JAMES3, ABRAHAM S.2, JAMES1)2 was born March 16, 1838

REDINBAUGH January 19, 1865 in Shelby Co., OH. She was born 1842 in OH, and
died December 6, 1904.
Notes for JOHN H. CANNON:
In the 1880 LaPorte Co., census, John Rednbow (26y) of OH is shown living
with this family. According to my records, Marie's maiden name in
Redinbaugh-this is obvious a misspelling and is a relative of hers (probably
a brother).
The History of LaPorte Co., (as reported by Don Cannon), says "John H. was
born in Porter, southwest of Valparaiso and is the 4th son of James and Mary
(Jackson) Cannon. They are numbered among the early pioneers of LaPorte.
