WILL OF
JEREMIAH CANNON
BOX 6 In the Name of God Amen, I, Jeremiah Cannon of Charleston Neck in the Parish of St
NO 19 Phillips, and State of South Carolina being weak in body but of perfect sound mind
and memory thanks be to God for the same, do make and ordain this my last Will and
Testament in manner and form following (To wit) first I recommend my Soul to God who gave
it, and my Body to the Earth, to be buried in a Christian like manner, nothing doubting
but that I shall again receive it at the general resurrection by the Mighty Power of God.
And as to what earthy goods and effects it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give and
dispose in the manner and form following. Item first. I give to my Sons Jeremiah and
Whitfield, Six negro Slaves, namely Sibba, Friday, John, Kate, Richard and Molly, with
their issue or Issues, I also bequeath to my Sons Jeremiah and Whitfield my tract of land
containing one thousand four hundred and thirty eight acres, on the East side of big Pee
Dee running down to Bulls Creek, and adjoining Land of John Rogers near Cow-ford in Horry
District in the Sta!
te aforesaid, and it is again my further wish and desire, that should either of my Sons
Jeremiah or Whitfield die before me that the portion of the deceased brother revert to the
surviving Brother. To my Son Benjamin I give Five dollars, I also wish and desire that my
Servant Lucretia and her Child Mary Hannah, be sold and five hundred Dollars of the
proceeds thereof be invested for the benefit of my three Grand Children, Children of my
Son Isiah Cannon, the principal to be divided between them when they become of lawful age
I also will and bequeath all my ready money and the Notes and book accounts, that I may
leave or would be entitled to receive at my death after paying all my just debts to my son
Jeremiah Cannon. And It is my further wish and desire that in the event of the death of my
Sons Jeremiah and Whitfield before their attaining to the age of twenty one or dying
without Issue then the whole of my estate personal and Real to revert to the Corporation
of the Baptist!
Church in Charleston, So. Ca. in trust for the exclusive benefit of the poor of said
Church, and also in the event of the death of my three grand Children, above mentioned The
Legacies bequeathed to them also revert to the Baptist Church for the use aforesaid.-- I
now nominate my Friends A. C. Smith and Chas H. Lanneau, Executors, and Trustees to this
my last Will and testament and hereby revoking and making null and void, all wills and
bequest by me heretofore mentioned or made and hereby publishing and declaring this to be
my last Will and Testament have hereunto set my hand and Seal this sixteenth day of
October in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and forty.
