To All Persons who believe that James Cannon was married to Elizabeth Pickens I am one of
you. I think that Elizabetn Pickens was his first wife. I believe that James Cannons
second wife was Sarah Reed daughter of William Reed, and that he and Sarah Reed were my
ggg grandparents. Sarah Reed Cannon was the mother of 4 children: Unity Cannon, Clarissa
Cannon, a third daughter whom I believe was Hannan Cannon and a son who was James Cannon,
Jr. James Cannon was the father of another son, John Cannon who was in my opinion the son
of Elizabeth Pickens Cannon and she , Elizabeth, probably died in childbirth at the birth
of John. James Cannon made a deed to 55 acres of land lying on 12 mile River, to John
Cannon out of natural love and affection that he had for John. This deed was made on 21
April 1796.
James and Sarah were married before February 3, 1767 when they made a deed to the family
plantation to Samuel Cannon the eldest brother of James Cannon. The wife of Samuel
Cannon was Lydia Pennington. This deed made in Berkley County, SC was for 375 acres of
land in Newberry County, SC. The deed was recorded in Newberry County, SC Deeds Vol. Q-2
pages 376-379. I have a copy of this deed. Jacob Pennington, a Justice of the Peace,
signed the document attesting that it was signed by James Cannon and his wife Sarah
Cannon. It was also signed by Mary Cannon Pennington, wife of Jacob and sister of James
Cannon.
This land was left to James by the will of his father, John Cannon as his youngest son
with the proviso that James provide for his two, as yet unmarried sisters, Margat and
Rebecca until they come of age. (see will below)

A History of the John Cannon Family can be found on:

Other deeds by James and Sarah were: 2 April 1790- James Cannon & wife Sarah,
planter, to William Beazley for 30 pounds, 145 ac. bounded by Robert Rankin & Big
Reedy Branch. Granted to James Cannon 6 Feb. 1786, Conveyed to William Beazley 6 Feb
1786. Rec. 25 June 1792.
19 Nov. 1791 - James Cannon & wife Sarah, of Abbeville Co. to Samuel Crabtree for 5
pounds, 121 ac in Abbeville on Beaver Dam, Granted to James Cannon 6 Feb. 1786. William
Reed deeded to James Cannon, out of natural love and affection
The point of the above three deeds is to define the time frame of the marriage of James
Cannon to Sarah Reed. The were married to each other from at least February 3, 1767 to 19
November 1791. Unity Cannon was born about 1770. Clarissa Cannon was born about 1775.
Hannah was born about 1785. James Cannon, Jr. was born about 1783. They were all four
the children of Sarah Reed Cannon.
The 1790 Census, the first census of the United States shows in Ninety-Six District,
Pendleton County South Carolina the family of James Cannon consisted of 1 Free white male
of 16 years and upward including heads of families, 1 Free white male under 16 years, and
4 Free White females uncluding heads of families, a total of 6 persons.
The 1800 Census of Pendleton District South Carolina gives the following information
relative to the James Cannon family:
Fam. No. 363 James Cannon 01001- 00000 - 00 This reads as 1 male over
10 and under 16, and 1 male 45 and over. 0 females. None of the daughters were living
at home. The son, James Jr. was under 16. Sarah Reed Cannon was evidently dead.
Other families noted:
Fam. No. 326 Elijah Herren 30010 - 10100 - 00 3 boys under 10;
Elijah 26 and under 45. 1 girl under 10; and Clarissa 16 and under 26.
Fam. No. 366 Ormond Morgan
This is the last record that I have pertaning to the James Cannon family.
I do not know when or where James and Sarah died and were buried, but if anyone knows,
Please inform me.
