Please keep in mine when looking at this info, I do not have documentation.
I do know the gentleman who sent me this strongly believed what he had. but
according to his wife, at that time she was unsure of his documentation.
From my search with censuses. I do know this family was in Spartanburg in
the late 1700s and early 1800s. Ellis Cannon stayed in Spartanburg, but I
believe most of the family migrated to GA, then AL, MS, LA, TX, and
Arkansas. They aren't my line, therefore I know little other information
about them.
My James Cannon of Laurens County was born about 1797/98. Faye had put me in
touch with a Dr. Reid of Spartanburg who connected with James Cannon, b.
abt 1795 I believe, of Spartanburg County, SC.
Laurens and Spartanburg are right up there together along with Greenville,
Abbeville, and Anderson. Newberry is just below Laurens Co. There were
Cannon families in all of these Counties early on. However, William Cannon,
who I think was my James Cannon's father, was the only Cannon in Laurens
County in 1790 and 1800. In 1800 he had 3 sons under 5 and 1 or 2 older
children.
There was no William on the 1810 census which I suppose he left the county
or died before 1810. I tend to believe he died during this time. James
doesn't show up until the 1840 Laurens Census. I have no idea where he was
on the 1820 and 1830. He may be there under another spelling or maybe he
hid from the census takers!
His wife, Juretta, was born in VA. and I have told the Juretta was a surname
well known in some part of Va. I have yet to check that out.
Everyone have a nice weekend! It's past my bedtime, so to bed I shall go!

Subject: [CANNON] James Cannon ca 1878
Hi Joy,
Thanks for the info on Ellis's ancestors, John, et al! I will save it
and enter it on my genealogy program as soon as I find a more substantial
connection between him and "my James". Though if Joseph Gainey and Faye
Berry could not find one after so many years, I think I am in trouble
here.
I know, through a 1999 -?- post from Faye Berry that there are others
looking for George Huffman Cannon and George Ellis Cannon's line. I hope
someone who knows more can and will post to this list.
According to the 1850 census, James Cannon (father of Thomas, George,
Harriet and Berry and husband of Elizabeth; all of Spartanburg, South
Carolina) would have been born about 1787. I probably made a typo
somewhere with another year, sorry. I got that year by subtracting his
given age (63 years) from the census year.
There is a query from Gladys; Re: James Elliot Cannon/Catherine Van Horn.
I have not run across him in my search, sorry. If any one else has
information on him would they please post, too.
Many thanks, again;
Roberta
