I was four when my dad was drafted in 1944. My brother and sister twins were
only 2 1/2. I remember my mother crying a lot while he was gone. I think I
cried every time she did. Even at that early age, my dad was special to me.
After basic training in MD, he was awaiting orders in San Francisco, where
their aircraft carrier was docked. While there he either fell off or was
blown off one of the elevators which raise the planes to the upper deck for
flight. He hurt his back and was hospitalize in the San Francisco Naval
Hospital and then moved to the Naval Convalescent Hospital at Yosemite
National Park.
After three months there, he was discharged and headed home. My
grandfather, aunt and uncle lived just a few houses up the street from us.
Mother, the twins and I had walked up the street to visit, and my uncle
asked me to go to the little cafe which was almost in their back yard and
get him a coke. When I returned, there my beautifully handsome daddy was!
It surprised me so much that someone had to grab the coke that was slipping
right out of my hand!
For those who do not know, there is a web site for the WWII Memorial which
allows you to honor your relative by registering him (or her) and printing
out a nice certificate. The url is:
National WWII Memorial
WWII Registry! The memory of America's World War II generation is preserved
within the physical memorial and through the World War II ...
