On the above 2nd mentioned website of Cannon Genealogy, there is a picture
of "Richard Lee Cannon". I have been amazed @ the resemblance of him to my
GG-Grandfather, William Lafayette Cannon and one of his sons, Robert Lee
Cannon.
William Lafayette Cannon was the G-Grandson of Samuel Cannon & Lydia
Pennington.
William A. Cannon was William Lafayette's grandfather. William A. Cannon
was killed in what is referred to as "The Cannon Massacre" in early 1800s in
Illinois. His wife, Abigail, a daughter, and a son-in-law, were taken captive
and later released in/near St. Louis. Two sons, William C. and Isaac Cannon
(my GGG-Grandfather), managed to escape the massacre, being taken captive,
and found their way back to what is now Graves Co., KY where their mother,
Abigail Abrilla Williams's family had settled.
Isaac then later received a land grant and raised a large family in Graves
Co., KY. His son, William Lafayette Cannon m. Lydia/Lyndia Flemin Williams.
They too had a large family with my G-Grandmother, Sally Parthenia Cannon,
being one of their daughters. William Lafayette Cannon fought in the Civil War
and had his horse shot out from underneath him. He was compensated for his
horse, but returned home bedragled and shoeless and it has been said that
"only the dog recognized him".
All of this was documented in well kept records that was left in the care of
my grandmother's sisters, Myrtle Brann & Tulula Brann. Neither of them ever
married and lived their entire lives in their family homeplace in Water
Valley, Graves Co., KY. My G-Grandfather (Sally P Cannon's spouse), Thomas
Coleman Brann, built the house in the early 1900s and their grandfather, William
Lafayette Cannon resided with them in his elder years. So, they were GREAT
historians and wrote down and documented what their grandfather told them.
Hope that this helps anyone interested in researching our WONDERFUL Cannon
line!
Sincerely, Rhonda Guhy Johnston
