I am still, after several years, trying to determine the parentage of gg grandfather,
James L. Cannon, born circa 1815, supposedly in Tennessee, according to the 1850 census.
I strongly suspect he descended from one of the South Carolina groups. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

I'm from SC where there were lots of Cannons in Newberry SC and another line in
Spartanburg SC. My Cannons came from another line originating in Laurens, SC. I
haven't seem the name Derick, either. JoyMac

Sandra,
I have never heard the name "Derek" in connection with the Cannon clan.
The New York Cannons are quite distinct from the Southern Cannons.
You may want to investigate the line Andreis Canon of 1652 Staten Island.
Your antiquity is a rare and precious thing.

My husband has a powder horn that appears to have been made by Derek
Ca_non....it is a map horn of upstate NY, circa French and Indian
War....the
map shows Hudson River from "Halve Moon" to Crown Point and the Great
Lake,
showing Oswego, Fort Niagara, Fort Henry, etc, and the British coat of
arms
among other things. I did a cursory look for a Derek Cannon (guessing at
the
first n in the name, which is unreadable), but could find nothing for
him....is anyone researching a Derek Can_on of French and Indian war
times.....1750s....
