Hi Bart, Hope all is well with you. Im still searching the Bartley R.
Cannon line and keep coming back to two sides of possible connection. One
is that Bartley might be a grandson of one of your Bartletts and second,
that he is decended from William Cannon.
Would appreciate you sending a copy of the Staten Island Cannons to me so I
can take a look.
Thanks for your help.

There is a Staten Island, South Carolina Cannon connection.
The grandson of Andreis Canon was the captain of a ship which left from
Cannon's wharf on Staten Island for many trips South. A bit of slaving
may
have been involved.
He made stops in Jamaica, and frequently docked in Charleston. Some of
the
last names of Staten Island Cannon wives as well as Cannons show up in
South
Carolina at that time which was the mid 1700s.
I have a copy of the family history of the Staten Island Cannons which I
can
send to anyone interested.
Famous historian Zella Armstrong maintains that a William Cannon derived
from a 1752 birth on Staten Island is the forefather of the Tenessee
Cannons
based upon his pension request in 1832 or so in TN.
That William Cannon was one of "Marion's Men" (the Swamp Fox). He was
captured by the British and on a prison ship in Charleston Harbor during
the
Rev War. He escaped and on his jump off the ship, he broke his leg.
My yDNA tests prove that a NY Cannon is NOT part of my line. but this
William Cannon could be a NY Cannon. My yDNA test also prove that other
TN
Cannons long thought to be in my line are not.
My Cannon research came to the "brick wall" because I was too stupid to
research ALL the many spellings of Cannon. My line showed up in North
Carolina as Kennons in the late 1700s. It took a distant cousin to
discover
the key.

Dear Joymac I don't recall if we have ever corresponded before( if we have
forgive my bad memory), but when I saw your e-mail stating that your
ancestry came out of Laurens, S.C. I had to write. My ancesters from
Laurens
were John and Rebecca ( Helms or Hellams) Cannon. He was born in Ireland
around 1833 and came to America with his brother around 1844 or1845. His
brother eventually returned to Ireland. At least that is the story we have
been told and we do have a letter from an uncle Martin to Janie written in
1899. John and Rebecca had five children according to the 1880 census:
John
Allen, Joseph Bardwell, James Patrick, Susan Janie and Hester Rebecca( my
grandmother). There is also the possiblity of another child, William
Thomas,
who would have been the oldest. Could any of these be among your
ancesters?
I know there were alot of Cannons in Laurens County, surely there must
have
been a reason rather than just an accident that they all ended up
there together. Surely most if not all of them were related some how.
Would
love to hear any info. you might have on OUR relatives. Have a blessed
day.
Tony

I'm from SC where there were lots of Cannons in Newberry SC and another
line
in Spartanburg SC. My Cannons came from another line originating in
Laurens,
SC. I haven't seem the name Derick, either. JoyMac
