As we all have run into, names are often spelled in many ways, and we
realize that only way to know how a specific individual spelled his name is
by seeing his signature...or, in this case, perhaps his powder horn. The
way clerks spelled names on records was often different from how a person
spelled it - I have one Va will where the same woman's name is spelled 3
different ways - Rollow, Rollo, Raleigh, indicating only that the clerk
could NOT make up his mind! So, spelling differences don't signify much. I
was just hoping that there was a relative of a Derek/Dyrak, etc Cannon,
perhaps from upper New York, who took part in the French and Indian War, in
that area.....seeing as how that was the map on his horn - .and
that there was a descendant who could 'fill in the blanks'. We live in a
houseful of antiques and most don't give us a hint as to who once owned
them or where they've been......this was a case of being a definate 'maybe'.
Thanks.
Sandra
The only " Derek" in the cannon connections is my father
but it is spelled
"
dyark " and not Derek.
