George Cannon

Married 15 January 1835, Sumner County, Tennessee
Spouse: Lucinda Gaines
Born 1816-1821, Tennessee
The 1850 Robertson County, TN, Census lists a George and Lucinda Cannon.
Based on their ages, and the ages of their children, I believe them to be
the same George and Lucinda who were in McLean County, Kentucky, in 1860.
His occupation was given as shoemaker. Sometime shortly after the 1850
census was taken, George moved his family to Kentucky because his youngest
daughter, Susan Margaret, was born in Kentucky in 1852. The first record I
have found of George in Kentucky is the 1860 Census for McLean County,
Kentucky. In that census, George gave his occupation simply as "laborer."
He did not identify the type of work in which he was engaged.
George enlisted in the Union Army on October 1, 1861, as Kentucky's 26th
Infantry Regiment was being organized; it was later attached to the Army of
Ohio. The 26th Regiment had set up a main camp at Calhoun, Kentucky, in
early November of 1861. In February of 1862, they moved toward Nashville,
TN. George, along with the others in his regiment, mustered in at Nashville
on March 8, 1862. On April 7th - the second day at Shiloh - George's
regiment was engaged in heavy fighting. Seven of its members were killed;
sixty were wounded. George was among those wounded, with shots in his neck
and thigh. He was sent to a regimental hospital in St. Louis, Missouri,
where he contracted smallpox. He was then sent to his home in Rumsey,
Kentucky, where he died on May 12, 1862.
Shortly after George's death, his widow Lucinda married Ludwell Brackett in
McLean County, Kentucky. The marriage took place December 7, 1962 at
Lucinda's home. Witnesses to the marriage were a Shackleford and Willis
Brackett. A thorough search of the entire McLean County census for the year
1870 did not find Lucinda or Ludwell Brackett listed. But I did find her,
I believe, in the census record for the family of James Hendrick where she
was listed as Linda Brackett, age 53, born TN.
George and Lucinda Cannon had six children:
1. Lavina Cannon, born 1836; married Charles Allen Long
2. Phebe Jane Cannon, born 1837; married Joseph M. Bales
3. James M. Cannon, born 1844
4. Mary Elizabeth Cannon, born 1845; married James F. Hendricks
5. Rosanna Cannon, born 1849; died 1857
6. Susan Margaret Cannon, born 1852; married Charles T. Pinkston
My great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Cannon whose marriage records state
that she was married "at the home of Mrs. Lucinda Bracketts."
Does anyone on the list connect to this George Cannon? His parents may have
been George and Phebe Cannon although I have no proof of this, nor do I know
where this family lived before being in Tennessee in the 1850s.
