Here's a SC-TX-E.TN Cannon tidbit.
I'm from the Zachariah Cannon line. (1767 VA) He was in Jefferson County,
TN by 1801 and descended from a line of Goochland Cannons who moved to NC
around the time of the RevWar before heading to TN and TX.
One of Zachariah's sons was Benjamin Bartlett Cannon. (I'm "the
fifth")
BBC I was told his wife Eliza needed to be moved to a warmer climate for her
health. So in 1846 he did a "recon" through E. Texas looking for good
planting lands. His trip journal is an important document in Texas history.
He recorded everything he spent and made thousands of observations of the
character of the lands and the people he met.
He eventually brought his family to Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas, but the
year before, during his "recon", he spent the night at Cannon's Ferry on the
Neches. He was surprised to learn than the owner of the ferry was Ben "E."
Cannon. They spent the entire night, to no avail, trying to figure out if
they were related.
Eliza died two days after arriving in TX. Within a couple of weeks he
married a schoolteacher he knew from back in Hamilton County, TN.
Here is a point that needs to be remembered. We modern family history
researchers often know more of our family history than the ancestors we are
studying.
BBC I married Eliza Tunnel in 1828 in what is now Oak Ridge TN. The cabin
they were married in is still there. Most of her relatives were in
Nacodoches, TX by 1836. There is a Sam Houston connection in all of this.
My yDNA testing indicates an early SC-VA connection, but it is NOT the one
Zella Armstrong theorized about seventy years ago.

Sure! Tomorrow I will scan both documents (the letter and several articles
on the Cannons in TX). There are also mentions of the McWilliams, Cannons
and Todds in my great-great grandfather's diary (he was a parish judge and
his diary survived him somehow after the yellow fever epidemic).
Another bit of info--supposedly the Cannons are kin to those who started the
Cannon Mills. And in Newberry County SC, at least, they belonged and were
buried to the Lutheran Church there.
If you have any Cannon family photos, I sure would love to see them. I did
find one photo of David's sons, Henry Edwin, circa 1900, in one of those
articles.
Also, you asked about Henry Cannon--he was I believe the youngest son of
William A. and Elizabeth Ruff Cannon. I will scrounge around tonight for
that info. Hope it helps. How is your husband descended from the Cannons?
And where do ya'll live?

This is great! Thanks Eugenia. Would it be possible for me to get a copy
of the letter? Thanks so much for your help.

Here is some preliminary info--some articles transcribed about the Cannons.
Tonight I will send names, dates, etc from the notebook I keep at home.
From a letter from one of William Henry and Nancy Cannon Hall's
granddaughters (written in 1956):
"I believe my grandfather, William Henry Hall together with his wife [Nancy
Cannon] and the children which were then born, came to Texas from the
vicinity of Charleston SC [spent one year there before leaving for TX in
1842]. Aunt Rebecca was one of the children [also included Henry, Virgil,
Kate] and rode with them in their surrey, and they also had two wagons
filled with slaves which they brought with them." Second note: "...she told
me that in the olden days she was taught to weave material. And that she
first she used a spinning wheel to make the thread, and then weaved the
material and made pants for members of her family. She said that she and
Aunt Liza used to weave together." [I include this because this was taught
by Nancy Cannon to her daughters.] Third excerpt: "Nancy Cannon and Mary
Cannon were sisters. Nancy Cannon married William Henry Hall. I believe she
told me they were originally from the state of South Carolina. At that time
they lived
in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Texas.

Eugenis,
Thanks so much for your response.
Yes, I surely would like to have the information. My husband's family,
is not into research, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about their
Cannon family. And information is welcomed.
I understand that William Cannon's children:
David R. (Ruff or Revina) Cannon, came to TX in 1838 or earlier;
Nancy Cannon Hall, Mary Ann McWilliams, and their mother Elizabeth Ruff
Cannon, came later;
and was there a Henry Cannon, and if so what happened to him?
Thanks,
Sallie

Sallie,
Sorry for taking so long to write; I was 'cleaning house' and came across
your email, which I somehow missed. I am a descendant of Nancy Cannon Hall,
who was a daughter of Elizabeth Ruff Cannon Holt Watkins--let me know if you
still want this info.

In viewing databases on RootsWeb, concerning William Cannon, b. abt 1787,
SC, (son of David Cannon & Nancy Johnston) I noticed some databases show
that William Cannon and wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Ruff, had a child named
Elizabeth Cannon, b. Nov. 19, 1799.
I do not find this Elizabeth as a child of William and Elizabeth Ruff
Cannon. I show children as, David R. , Mary Ann, Nancy, and possibly a
brother Henry Cannon
Anyone have a record of the names of the children of William and Elizabeth
Ruff Cannon.
Anyone have a copy of the original Will of William Cannon?
Thanks,
Sallie
