Hello Richard and Melissa! I have information on your Cannon's (as well as
a newspaper article about the family) .
Here is what I have on this branch, please fill in or correct anything you
may have different, I will note any documentation I may have on my
information :
Thomas Cannon b. 1770 ca. d. bet. 1863 & 1873 Mercer Co., KY. his wife is
still unk. to me. He is the father to your William Cannon and siblings
(see listed below)
children of Thomas Cannon were:
Charles Cannon b. ? married to Cathrine Stamm
John Cannon b. ? m. to Milly Loving Harding

I have information on each of the above families, some more some less:
Please let me know which branch you may need more information on. In the
mean time below I have cut/pasted the newspaper article found in the Hillsboro
Lilb. concerning this family and comfirming they moving from Mercer Co. KY to
Hillsboro. I would love find out thier mothers name, that is where I
finally got stuck was on thier father Thomas Cannon. I get the impression his
wife died young, but can not find a marriage for him other than him traveling
back and forth between his home in KY to his kids homes in ILL. Let me
know what you think! This was writtein 1873 about this Cannon family, comb
over it carfully and you will find lots of clues to answer alot of questions
and fill in some blanks. Many of the grandchildren ended up migrating on to
Kansas Terr. and back.
Hope this helps, Sandie Williams Prater-Choctaw, Okla.

A.H.H.R. In The Hillsboro Democrat,
August 27 1873
William Cannon came to Montgomery County about 1824 when there were only
three cabins in Hillsboro; with him came two brothers. Charles and John Cannon,
all of whom settled here and as John and Charles are not living we will say
of them that John married Millie Loving, daughter of William Loving who lived
where Joseph McBride now lives. They had two daughters. Eliza married Tom
Rose who fought through the Mexican War with distinction. Tom is dead and
his widow afterwards married John Armentrout and they live in Idaho. Louisa
became the wife of John Henry White but is now dead, leaving two children.
John Cannon also raised one daughter for his wife, Mary, who first married a
son of Uncle Billy Griffith, who went to California and never returned. She
is now the wife of Henry Robinson and resides a few miles south of town.
John Cannon died many years ago and his wife survived him severals years.
Charles Cannon married a French lady by the name of Stam, a sister of the
wife of Mr. Dickenson and Mr. Thomas, who were our first brick masons. On
the breaking out of the mining fever at Galena Mr. Cannon as well as Mr.
Dickenson and Mr. Thomas, removed to the lead districkt and settled in Wisconsin.
Charles Cannon died there.
A few years after William Cannon came to our county two of his sisters came:
Nancy who married Thomas W. Heady, and died early leaving no children.
Margaret married a Mr. Hearld and removed to Missouri where she died leaving 7
children.
Thomas Cannon, thier father came to the county several times on visits and
remained long enough to become pretty generally known. Returning to Kentucky
he died at the age of 93 years.
William Cannon was married to Catherine Loving in 1826, and settled a few
miles south of Hillsboro. They raised a large family of 13 children out of
fifteen. William R. Cannon, his oldest son married Miss Riber and has four
children. He has been good naturedly nick named "Chuck" by which is perhaps best
known. He prospered so fast and well that he became infected with the
Western fever and pulled up stakes a year or so ago and started West and landed in
Kansas where he now resides.
Permelia, his oldest daughter, first married to Wm. Compton, who died early
leaving one child. Permelia afterwards married James Grisham with whom she
still lives, having nine children of whom four are married. She is now the
grandmother of five children. Betsy Ann married first James Brown who died
early leaving one child. She afterwards married John Stevens. They have nine
children ow whom two are married. There is one child to call Betsy Ann
grandmother. They reside near Donnellson.
Christiana married William Edwards who died a few years ago since, leaving
nine children. Allen and his wife labored early and late to secure a piece of
land for each child, and having secured that, built a fine house for his
family and like many others who have striven for the same end, and on its
accomplishment, sickened and died.
Martha married John Pence and lives near Walshville. they have four
children.
Eleanora married Charles Edwards, borther of W.A. Edwards. they have nine
children and reside southwest of Hhillsboro a few miles.
Susan married Thomas W. Green, and has nine children. Sarah Cannon married
Wm. Vikory and has some five or six children; they moved to Kansas a year or
two ago.
James Cannon maried Jane Weese and died recently, leaving three small
children.
Samuel P Cannon married Sophronia Butler and lies on Shoal Creek. They have
two children.
Amanda married Del. McAlister and now resides in Mo; three children.
Maria maried James Hoffman and lives south of Hillsboro a few miles. They
have two children.
John and Martin are at home. Mr. Cannon has ever been a prominent man in a
private was well as a political point of view.
he has often been called on in a private way to settle disputes as well as
juryman to try cases. Often he has served as constable and deputy sheriff,
and has pursued the business of collecting, compromising and settling up debts
for others. In a large measure he has been useful as administrator,
executor, or guardian for othrs.
he has 15 chidren, of whom 13 are living; 99 grandchildren; whom 90 are
living; 13 great grandchildren living.
Hi Richard, Marcella and Melissa,
I have been following your discussion on this topic with interest ever
since it began. A William Cannon was born in Ireland in 1795. I think
this William Cannon was my gg grandfather. His birthdate and location is
verified by my family tradition and the 1850 federal census of Bastrop
County, TX. I think he is the same William Cannon that is listed in the
Hall County, GA 1820 census and I know that he is the William Cannon listed
in the 1830 census of Limestone County Alabama.
The only information that I have for this William Cannon listed in the 1820
census of Hall County, GA is found in that Census.
What my data on this record shows is: 2 males under 10 (born after
1810), 1 male age 16 to 26 (born between 1794 & 1804), 1 female age,
under 10, 1 female age 16 to 26, and 1 male slave age 26 to 45.
Others who have examined this record state that the marks shown for
the female under age 10 and the male slave are not really marks but
on their copy of the microfilm are just scratches.
I do not know that the William Cannon of the Hall County, Georgia 1820
census was my ancestor. My great grandfather was Almon Cannon and Almon
had an older brother, Elijah Cannon and a sister Margaret Cannon and by
family tradition a brother, Charles Cannon.the father of Almon, Elijah and
Margaret Cannon, but the family members shown in the 1820 Hall County, GA
census fits them as to age. We know by later Tennessee data (both family
data and census) that all three siblings, Almon, Elijah and Margaret
Cannon, were born in Georgia. Almon was born 13 June 1812, Elijah was
born ca 1809-1810 and Margaret was born ca 1814.
The 1830 Limestone County, Alabama census shows the William Cannon
household as:
1 male 5 - 10 (born 1820-1825) This would be son, William R.
Cannon.
1 male 10 - 15 (born 1815-1820) This would be son, Charles M.
Cannon
1 male 30 - 40 (born 1790-1800) This would be William Cannon, b.
1795
1 female 30 - 40 (born 1790-1800) This would be Mary Morgan Cannon.
Note here again the husband and wife are in the same age bracket and they
could be the couple from Hall County, Georgia. The earlier children:
Elijah, Almon and Margaret are now young adults and could be living and
working for neighboring households.
Another Limestone County record for William Cannon is a bill of sale
recorded in Book 3, page 24 in which William Cannon sold to Francis English
a negro slave named Joe who was about 26 years old. Sales price $650.
In Limestone County, Alabama Deed Book 5, pages 227 and 228 is recorded a
deed which was made in New Orleans, Louisana on 6th of February 1835. In
this deed William Cannon is selling to Nathaniel Terry, both of whom are
listed as being from Limestone County, Alabama four (4) lots located in the
town of Mooresville, Alabama. They were town lots numbered 13, 14, 19 and
20.
William Cannon's first wife, Mary (Morgan) Cannon died in Limestone County,
Alabama in 1831or 1832 This fact along with her name was learned in a
Bastrop County Court record of a suit filed by William Cannon's second wife
against William R. Cannon the administrator of William Cannon's estate.
Mary Morgan Cannon's burial site was not identified. This second wife was
named Agnes K. Garrison or Patterson and they married in Alabama about
1832. (NOTE BY Douglas Foster this second marriage may have been a point
of contention between William Cannon and his children. It may have been
why so little has been revealed by Almon and Elijah about their parents.
It is evident from the testimony in the Bastrop County suit that William R.
Cannon had little love for his stepmother even though he must have lived
with her for a period of time during the early days while his father and
brother, Charles, were in Texas.)
William Cannon owned land in Bastrop County, Texas as early as March 29,
1835. He and son, Charles M. Cannon were mustered into the Company of
Volunteers, Zaval Guards commanded by Captain Abraham Marshall on 16 May
1836. Charles M. Cannon was listed as age 18 of Mooresville, Alabama,
enlisted for the war. William Cannon's showed the same 16 May 1836 date
and note stated "He joined the Service in Capt. McCllellen's (partially
too faint to read) has been upon detached service and has not joined this
company until now. William Cannon was shown as age 41 at the time of the
Muster.
William Cannon lived in Texas for the rest of his life. He was listed in
the 1837, 1840 and 1841 tax rolls and 1850 Federal Census of Bastrop
County, Texas. He died in Bastrop, Texas in December 1851. His son,
William R. Cannon was appointed his administrator. He evidently speculated
heavily in land throughout his life in Texas.
My great grandfather, Almon Cannon, was born in Georgia at an unknown
location on June 13, 1812. He was married 3 times. His first wife is
unknown, but from the age of their 3 children he married the first time
when he was 18 or 19 years old. Some researchers feel that his first wife
was a MORGAN or a BLESSING. There is also a family tradition that his
first wife may have been indian or part indian. He is recorded on the 1836
Tax List of Bedford County, TN in the 23 District. Other CANNONS on that
tax list in that district were his brother, Elijah Cannon, Letetia Cannon
(the divorced wife of Willis Cannon) and Newton Cannon, Gov. His second
wife has been identified as Elizabeth Stewart by whom he had 4 children.
Their oldest son was Samuel Stewart Cannon. It is assumed that Almon and
Elizabeth divorced about 1844 and that Elizabeth married a man named Gibson
sometime thereafter who either died or they divorced before the 1850 census
(see notes on Elizabeth Stewart). Almon married Ellender Powell about
1845 by whom he had 4 more children.
Family tradition states that: 1. Almon's father was born in Ireland and
that his mother was born in South Carolina. These birthplaces are the same
in the 1880 census. 2. There was possibly a brother, James, who went to
Texas and was killed on the way. 3. Almon grew up in indian country and
learned many indian skills and medical cures. His neighbors would often
come to him for indian remedies. 4. Almon in his early adult life lived
in close proximity and worked for Willis Cannon and called Willis "uncle".
This may have been a real relationship or could have been only a honorary
title. If real then Almon's father, would be a brother of Willis Cannon
of Bedford County, TN and of Augustus Cannon of Lincoln County, TN and of
Minos Cannon of Madison County, Alabama who died in 1853 and is buried in
Holman Cemetery in Lincoln County, TN. The will of Minos Cannon of Madison
County, Alabama revealed that he had other siblings: "5th, All the balance
of said proceeds of sale of notes, bonds, moneys, etc. , I wish divided
into three parts one of which I give and bequeath to each of my surviving
sisters: Hennrietta Handy,
Euphamai Wolfe and the other children of my deceased sister, Ellender
Miller, to them and their heirs forever." These sisters all lived in
Indiana and all of these siblings including Willis Cannon of Bedford
County, TN, Augustus Cannon of Lincoln County, TN had earlier lived in
Scott County, KY. They were children of Willis Cannon who migrated from
Sussex County, DE to Scott County. Willis Cannon is listed on the 1800 Tax
List of Scott County, KY
The book, "ANNALS AND MEMORIALS OF THE HANDYS AND THEIR KINDRED" by Isaac
W. K. Handy, D.D. states: "William Handy (1774-1827)-------------- At age
sixteen he left Maryland and arrived in Louisville, Kentucky, in September
1791. He then moved to Scott County, Kentucky, where in 1799 he married
Henrietta Cannon, daughter of a retired sea captain. He was a farmer on
Elkhorn Creek near Georgetown, Kentucky. He died in 1827, and in 1830 his
widow and all of their children (they had 9 children), with the exception
of John Gray Handy, moved to Indiana."
NOTE: If this statement is accurate and if Willis Cannon is truly the
father of Henrietta Cannon, then Willis Cannon was a retired sea captain,
and could have easily sired children in Ireland during one or more of his
voyages. This Willis Cannon was a son of Henry Cannon and Frances Newton
of Dorchester County Maryland and he had siblings Charles, Newton, Wateman,
Clement, Eleanor, Nancy, Frances and Euphamay. Newton Cannon was also a
ship's captain.
Please give me your thoughts.

Melissa,
I think that your letter was very interesting.
I have a Thomas Cannon, brother of my Robert Cannon Jr., and son of
Robert Cannon Sr. and Elizabeth ?, that were in Washington Co., Ky. in
1801 and in Mercer Co., in 1808. He married Christine (Reubey or Riney)
on 17 May 1803 in Washington Co., Ky. This is about all that I have on
Thomas, but I do have a lot on his family. Robert Cannon Jr. is my GGG
Grandfather. Robert Cannon Jr. went to McDonough Co., Ill. in 1833.
Almost all of his brothers and sisters have sons named James,
Robert, William and John. My Thomas Cannon also had brothers named
James, Robert, William and John.
I am in a group of 4 of us who are all looking for Robert Cannon Sr.
parents. I am going to send your message to them in hopes that they
might have more on Thomas Cannon.
Would you please send me what you have on your William Cannon family?
I hope that we can make a connection.
Richard Swank
I do not have a lot to offer, but you are welcome to the little that I
have
My oldest Cannon that I know about is William Cannon. I know that he was
born in Kentucky, and I think that he was born in Washington County.
Washington County is on the western border of Mercer County.
There may be a connection to our Cannons, but I have little else to
offer. I'll give you what I have on William.
Born September 10, 1809 Mercer County, KY
served in military and is on the military roll in 1861. (Don't know the
branch at this point)
Died November 02, 1878 Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois
married Catherine Loving May 06, 1827 Montgomery County, Illinois
born Abt. 1815 Kentucky
died July 25, 1887 Montgomery County, Illinois
I do not know for sure who his siblings are, but I suspect that John, Robert
and James Cannon are brothers, or possibly cousins. They are all common
names as well, so a naming pattern isn't real useful just yet.
Land patent records show:
James was in Greene County, IL by 1840.
John was in Montgomery County, IL by 1835
Robert was in Macoupin County, IL by 1839.
William was in Montgomery County, IL by 1835.
I have other family that migrated from or near Greene County to Montgomery
County, IL. There was a railroad going through Greene County that
atttracted settlers, so I watch these counties for migration patterns.
Macoupin is very near Litchfield, Montgomery County, where a lot of my
family settled.
I also have census data on them.
Melissa
I am researching the Robert Cannon Sr. line in Washington Co., Ky.,
and think that he might have come from Ireland between 1778 and 1780.
We think that his son John P. Cannon was born 1778 in Ireland and we
know that his son Robert Cannon Jr. was born 1780 in Pa. I then have
them in Washington Co., Ky about 1790.
What I would like to know, is there any more Cannon families that
might have come from Ireland about this time. I am trying to see if
there might have been a brother or sister that came over here with
Robert's family.
Richard Swank.
