Hi Jan, I saw your message about Cannon's in Tenn. If you or anyone happens
to find a James Cannon born Abt 1834, lived in (W)VA I would certainly love
to hear about it. I have been searching for several years to no avail for
something about him. He married Catherine Van Horn, they were my paternal great
grandparents. Their only son John Timothy, was my father's father. In the 1900
census, his birthplace is listed as WV. but if he moved here when he was
very young, he maybe didn't know where he was born. There just doesn't seem to be
any information out there about him, so I would appreciate any leads that
anyone might find. Gladys in WV
I, too, am researching CANNONS from TN.
First known CANNONS are five brothers--Alexander, Elizie, Elisha, William and George. The parents' names are unknown, but story is that "at an early date they immigrated from Ireland to this country and settled in PA. Alexander & Elizie died not leaving any families... Elisha, William and George moved to east TN, later to middle TN and settled in Robertson Co." This history is in letters from a son of George, David Etherly CANNON, written to his daughter & granddaughter-in-law, in 1914 & 1915.
George CANNON was born about 1794, census records indicate TN. He married Lydia SPENCE abt 1827, believe in TN. They had 9 known children: John W, William Henry, David Etherly, Daniel Spence, Elisha A, Mary Ann, Nancy A, Herressa Elizabeth, & Missouri.
George & Lydia moved their family to DeSoto County, MS in 1845, and appear on the census' of 1850 & 1860 for that county. Apparently they sold their property in DeSoto Co. in 1861, and that's the last anyone knows of them.
Their son, Daniel Spence CANNON, is my 2nd great-grandfather. He was born 1832, in TN, and died in 1906 in Arkansas Co, Arkansas. He married Joanna Victoria GAILER (various spellings..) abt 1857, believe in Marshall Co, MS. This family ended up in Arkansas County, AR.
Would love to hear if anyone might know the five brothers of the unknown immigrant parents... or where to start!
FYI--there was a Bird CANNON in the Arkansas County, AR census' of 1850, 1860 & 1870. Plus, I know I saw another one in Sevier County, AR--in fact, there's a pocket of CANNONS in Sevier County, AR.
Thanks in advance for any info on these CANNONS.

Hi Janice,
Do you have BIRD's birthday? A son born to Russell Cannon and Elizabeth
Powell Cannon was BIRD, born about 1825 in either SC or GA. I wonder if, he
too, was named after the BIRD you mentioned? And "Milton" and/or "John
Milton" seemed to be a popular name in both our families.
From what I've read, many of those who called themselves "Scots-Irish" came
from presbyterian Scot families who left Scotland to relocate in Ireland to
avoid religious persecution from the English at the time. As I understand
it, they didn't want to embrace the Church of England, preferring to remain
presbyterian. At least that's what I read in some history books several
years ago. They lived in Ireland a while, probably marrying and raising
families, then emigrated to the States. My grandparents were Baptists (and
also claimed to be "Scots-Irish") but I believe there may have been
Presbyterians further up the line.
This is, of course, sheer speculation on my part. And my version of history
(above) could be all wet, depending on the accuracy of the information I
read long ago.
Lots of questions but not enough answers. The searching is fun, but oh the
joy (!) when you find a connection and a long-lost ancestor.

Kay, you listed a John Milton. We have a Milton Presley CANNON. Our belief
is that he was named after Milton BIRD, a very prominent preacher in the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church. BIRD died just two years prior to my
ancestor's
birth. This breakaway group started in the KY area circa 1812, and my line
were
strong members of it.....many are buried in the Piney Fork Cumb Pres Church
graveyard near Marion, KY.
Was your line in this Church group....perhaps that could be the reason for
the Milton given name.
Ain't research fun!!
Janice
Richard......how can you forget my Mary "Polly" CANNON who married John
CHAMPION. Robert and Elizabeth gave their consent for the marriage 13
November 1794 in Mercer County, Kentucky.
I descend from their daughter, Ruth CHAMPION, who married William McMURTRY
and they lived in Knox County, Illinois and are buried there.
Just kidding.....I'm not "really" mad....just want to make sure she gets
back into the family!!!!

Joyce, Here is my KY line:
John CANNON was in SC for the births of 4 children that we know of: Jemima,
Israel, Perryman, and Naomi. They removed to Caldwell Co., KY some time before
1816. All of these children are in the Caldwell Co., KY marriage records.
Israel is my 3xgrandfather.
We know they were from SC from the 1850 census wherein Jemima and Perryman
claim SC as birthplace. Israel d. in 1837 and I haven't traced Naomi past her
marriage record.
John remarried in 1819 to Rachel WOOTEN, sold his land to son, Israel, in
1820, with no "forwarding address". None of our researchers have ever found
where he moved to.
This line stayed in Caldwell Co. for 2 more generations until their removal
to MO, and then on to KS.

Kay and others, There is something that I have been thinking about for some
time, and want to know if there are any grounds to it. There are kinda/sorta
certain migration routes that our CANNONs took when removing from the Carolinas.
As Kay mentions, her line went south to GA. And I know there are lines that
continued on into AL and other southern states. But there are several lines
that left SC and went northwest into KY and on to MO, and ILL.
Does anyone think that these later migrations might also be connected to
country of origin? For example: the lines that claim England, went into the
South, and the ones that claim Scotland/Ireland, went northwest. At least that is
the case with my line, which went SC>KY>MO>KS.
I haven't actually charted this out, but it comes to mind quite often as I
read the different posts. Would love to hear if other listers have had this or
similar ideas.
Thanks for bearing with me on this one....always looking for something to
breakdown the brickwall.
Janice (Cannon)
Hello,
I had saved this hoping I could tie in with it. I thought it might have the
name you was looking for and did. I know how much help it will be but it was
interesting. I am looking for info on Isaac Cannon 1806 Jefferson County Tn.
Sevier County - file
2
Never the less, I searched the early records for any mention of an Abraham
Henderson in TN. The name Abraham has been found in the Cannon line in Jefferson
County when in the 1820's a child was named Abraham Henderson Cannon.
Depending upon which census you want to believe this Abraham Henderson Cannon was
either born in TN or NC. He named one of his sons Isaac Henderson Cannon. The
Sevier County TN Hendersons were close to the Cannons in early TN records, often
inter-marrying. There was a James Cannon who married a Rebecca Lackens, in
Jefferson County TN where a John Henderson was the bondsman.
Hi, my cannon's come from Greene County, Tennessee. Abraham Henderson Cannon m. Sarah Cornwell. Looking for Abrahams Father.

I have a Robert Cannon Sr. married to Elizabeth ? who came from Pa. to
Washington Co., Kentucky about 1790. His known children are Martha Ann
(Nancy), born 25 March 1768, Thomas Cannon, born about 1778, John P.
Cannon, born 27 February 1778 and Robert Cannon Jr. born in Pa. 17 March
1780. I have other children, but no proof that they are in the family.

Gary, I wonder if we're stuck in a similar quandary. My Cannon is Richard
Cannon, b. about 1760 in South Carolina, died July 12, 1831 in Habersham
County, Georgia. He was married to Elizabeth? sometime before 1796 in South
Carolina. It is believed she may have been born around 1770 in South
Carolina and died sometime after 1860 in Georgia. I don't know her last
name.
Richard is my gggggrandfather on my grandmother Lively's side of the family.
Family names include: Cliburn, Lively, Penick (or Pennick), Cannon, Powell
(Elizabeth Powell was married to Russell Cannon, Richard's son).
Perhaps we could share some information if you don't have any of this
already.
Are there other Cannons out there with the information we're missing?
Specifically, Richard Cannon's ancestors and his wife Elizabeth's last name?
Thanks!
Kay
