Hi Everyone :o)
My name is Linda Lowder and I just joined the list this morning. I am
hoping to learn more about my
great-great grandmother Jane CANNON from my father's side of the family.
You would think with her being my great-great grandmother, I would know
more about her, but my father's family seems to be determined not to give
me any information for some reason.
Jane CANNON was born about 1833 as far as I know. She married Abraham FINE
September 7, 1854. Abraham was born 1822. I do not know when Jane died.
Abraham died after 1880, but I have no specific date of his death.
Jane CANNON and Abraham FINE had the following children:
Rivanna Evaline FINE, b. July 27, 1855
Allen Buchanon FINE, b. MArch 1857
Amanda E. FINE, b. 1859
Argon Dorcas Calidonia FINE, b. 1862
Elijah FINE, b. 1864
Martin Abraham FINE (my great-grandfather), b. May 5, 1866
Edmund Harris FINE, b. 1869
Waaaayyyyy back about 1987 when I first began to research my family lines,
I wasn't very good at making notes and keeping records. I would find some
information at the library and then quickly jot it down, not always noting
the source. One of those times was when I found Jane CANNON in a family
tree with these people in it, BUT she was names Jane BUCANNON or BUCHANON.
Since then, I have not ever found this reference again and don't even know
if it's accurate. She named one of her children Allen Buchanon FINE, but
this may just be a coincidence.
I don't know where Jane CANNON was born, but she and ABRAHAM FINE married
in Washington County, Tennessee and reportedly, this is where Abraham was
born and where he died.
If anyone here has this Jane CANNON in their family line, I would love
hearing from you as I have never been able to link Jane with any other
CANNON families.Even the history of the CANNON family around
Tennessee/Washington County, Tennessee would be great! Thank you!
I find things such as the webpage at:
http://www.modelflight.com/earlycannon.html and even though there is a JANE
CANNON mentioned born about the time my Jane probably was, I have no way to
confirm if this is her family.
Thank you for any help you can give.
Best wishes,
Linda Lowder
In 1844 in Pickens District, South Carolina, there was probate for Russell Cannon. Mentioned are Abraham Duke for his wife, Judy Kendrick, James Cannon, Josiah Marchbanks for his wife, Carter Cannon and heirs of William Cannon.
He had 207 acres of land on Rices Creek adjoining lands of John Arial and James Mansel and others.
Is anybody researching this line?
Gary Blakely
Gladys,
My Nanna had LAVINA in her middle name, also their property was called
Letrim, I've redirected the site to you this morning, I don't know too
terribly much about the Cannon, our librarian at the family history centre
has CANNON too, her name is Denyse Bonney, her email Denyse1(a)bigpond.com,
you never know.
Jenelle.

I might have some relevant information about Cannons in Ireland 1830-1870. I am presently on vacation and do not have access to my records. Will try to post the info in a few weeks.
Jim Cannon
Hello again, Jenelle, Regarding the information you mentioned from a Wal
Cannon, yes I would like to see it, although I doubt that it is relevant to my
Cannons. One never knows what strange little corner those elusive ancestors
are hiding in.
I am in search of my paternal great grandfather, James Cannon. What I
do know about him is that he was born about 1834, his wife was Catherine
VanHorn, and they lived in or near Glenville, WV., USA. His gravemarker says he
was a preacher, no denomination given. They had 4 children: (1) Mary, (2)
John Timothy -my grandfather- (3) Levina R and (4) Margaret Telitha. If you run
on to anything that seems to fit, I would love for you to inform me.
I want to copy a paragraph from a website that had the article, "The
origin of the surname, Cannon" for you. If you want to see more, I will see
if I can locate it again. It reads and I quote: "The origin of the large
group of Cannons in southern County Leitrim is unknown. However the large number
and high concentration of Cannons in southern County Leitrim probably
indicates that these Cannons are of the descendants of a third Irish sept that is not
identified in the historical account. There was a sept of the name O'Chanan
that had its territory in this area (known then as the kingdom of Breifne) that
may have been the forebearers of these southern County Leitrim Cannons."
Interesting little tidbit even if it isn't relevant, I thought.
If you wish to locate that yourself, let me know and I will see if I
can find the website for you. Gladys
Gladys,
Forgot to mention have been given a web site from a Wal Cannon in California
re CANNON if you want me to forward it to you.
Jenelle.

Hello Jenelle, I do not have any information regarding Bridget Cannon, nor
any of the names that you are searching for. I have been searching for a James
Cannon, born in 1834 and seem to have come to a dead end. I am going to
store your e-mail and if I run on to anything I will let you know. The dates that
I have does not seem to fit with your search, they were born about the same
time and could be relatives, but not parents, I think. Good Luck, and if I
find anything, I will be happy to share with you. As near as I can tell, all the
Cannons are Irish.
Gladys
Am searching for CANNON families from Roscommon, Ireland came to Australia, (mostly Brisbane/Ipswich area) in the late 1840's early 1850's. (2) possibilities for the Bridget Cannon I seek:-
1. Brigidam CANNON christened 1831, Ireland, Rosc. Laughl parents shown as Michaelis Cannon/Mariae CASEY
2. Brigidam christened 1832, Ireland, Rosc. Lisanu., parents JOANNIS CANNON/Catherinae MORAN.
Can someone tell me if Brigidam is irish for Bridget, Joannis irish for John, Catherinae irish for Catherine.
Thank you.

Janice,
No. I have no idea at this point. Elizabeth Ann Cannon is my 4th
great-grandmother. She was born somewhere in Illinois. I just found out
her name from her daughter's marriage records. From there, I found them in
the Montgomery County Census, but it only says that William was born in
Kentucky.
I'll let you know when I find out more.
