Hello Lynn,
I have Cannons in my family in East Baton Rouge that married into an
Acadian/Catholic family (Babin) and consequently there is a lot of
information on them in the records of the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge.
Unfortunately, I am in Florida and do not have time to track down the
information for you. However, I am forwarding some information that I hope
will help you.
I see where Elizabeth Lightner was born in Germany and it may be of help to
know that there was a community of Germans in Baton Rouge at this time. They
lived in what is now known as the Highland Road area.
Have to run.
Good Luck,
Debbie Smith

PROCEDURES FOR REQUESTING COPIES OF SACRAMENTAL
RECORDS AND/OR GENEALOGY INFORMATION
The Department of the Archives of the Diocese of Baton Rouge is able to
provide sacramental certificates and genealogy information for the twelve
civil parishes in and around the Baton Rouge area: Ascension, Assumption,
East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupée, St.
Helena, St. James, Tangipahoa, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana. Records
from all other Louisiana civil parishes should be requested from their
respective dioceses.
This department houses sacramental registers of baptisms, marriages, and
burial records up to about 1920. Later registers still remain in the custody
of the individual Catholic Church parishes.
The Archives of the Diocese of Baton Rouge has published all of its
sacramental records from 1707 through 1894 in a 20-volume set entitled
Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records. Any or all of these volumes
may be purchased from the Archives Office.
Those simply seeking family information can frequently consult these volumes
at their local library or the State Archives and thus save the expense of a
search/certificate fee. If a record does not appear under the family surnames
and surname variations listed in these volumes, it is not found in the
archives. Other exceptions are the slave/Indian records that have not yet
been published. A research request for information after 1894 must include a
town or name of a Catholic Parish church. A general search cannot be
accommodated.
All requests are handled by mail, e-mail or fax. We do not accept requests by
telephone

Jacqueline,
I have been searching for James Joseph Cannon b. 1798 in East Baton Rouge,
Louisiana and d. 1879 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He married
Elizabeth Lightener 1832-1834 but I don't know if the marriage took place in
Louisiana or Ohio. Three of their children were born in Louisiana and three
in Ohio.
If you have time, would you look in your book and see if there might be a
reference to this James J. Cannon and possibly where his marriage took place?
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
