I would love to invite Isaac Barton Cannon. Born abt 1806 in Jefferson County
Tn.
He was a school teacher and was the depot agent at the local railway. He
had 3-4 sons in the civil war at the same time. One became a Capt and was killed
in sight of his home. One of the other ones hid out in the woods near the
home and Isaac fed him when he fed the pigs. This family saw a lot of hard ship.
I would love to listen to his stories and find out who his parents are. And
where he is buried. He married Jane W. Palmer in 1826 and had a house full of
kids. I would set him at the head of my table and be thankful to have him there.
Paula Cannon Sweetwater, TN.
Virginia, thank you so much for posting this information. Unfortunately I
don't see any clues to connect your line to mine. My line went to Illinois
several decades earlier, and our origin was SC.
Again, thanks for your efforts,
Janice (Cannon)
Are you Wanda's daughter?

The first Cannon I have knowledge of is a Thomas Cannon b ca 1776 VA, d 1863
TN; m Martha (Patsy) Lea or Lee; their son, John, b ca 1816 TN, d ?; m
Jemima (Minnie) Fite; their son, Thomas, b ca 1854 and his death is my big
question. He married Margaret Green about 1872, I believe in Overton County
TN. Their children, Ferdinand, 1874; Minnie Alice, 1876; Nora , 1877 or
1878; Christopher Columbus, 1880. I know Margaret and her 3 younger
children appear in Wabash County IL about 1890, she married Charles Sapp in
1896 amd died there in 1899. She is buried in Mt. Carmel in Wabash County;
her obituary listed the three younger children ( girls married by that
time). It did not list Ferdinand or a first husband as having preceded her
in death. I have a feeling they didn't divorce in TN before she came to IL,
but that's not an impossiblity; I feel that more likely they died of some
prevalent disease, such as cholera, typhoid, flu and lots of others. If
there's a Cannon burying ground, maybe several, in Overton County or
adjoining counties, it might solve my mystery. I am a granddaughter of
Christoper Columbus Cannon.

Rhona, I am not familiar with your line and their travels. Would you do me
the favor of posting a brief outline of the timeframes and places they were.
I am descended of John CANNON who left Caldwell Co., KY after 1820 tax census
and don't know where he went. Some of his grandchildren went to Illinois,
others stayed in Caldwell until late 1800s.
Thanks a bunch, Janice (Cannon)
What a thoughtful idea to respond to.
I would invite to Thanksgiving Dinner my 4th Great Grandfather and
Grandmother, William A Cannon and his wife Lydia. William A. and Lydia were making
their way to the West after the American Revolution in search of his brother John
(who had fought in the American Revolution) and attempting to settle new
territory when almost the entire family was wiped out in an Indian Massacre. Only
two children (brothers) survived along with Lydia who was captured and later
released. I would also like to invite my GreatGrandmother, Sally, as William
A. and Lydia never had an opportunity to meet and know their great grand
child---who could always have one of the best Thanksgiving Dinners that anyone
could ever expect! Even tho Sally was not a male and did not bear children with
the Cannon name, I am definitely her legacy as I bear a strong resemblance to
her and am a lot like her with her many talents. William A. and Lydia would be
proud and honored to have had such a fine great grandchild---a woman with
integrity, wisdom, and much understanding, and one of the most loving women on
the face of the earth. I would also like to thank them for bearing their son
Isaac who was only 15 years old @ the time of the massacre and had enough witts
to escape the massacre----had it not been for him and his strong will and
witts, I would not be here!
Rhonda Johnston
4th Great Granddaughter of
William A. and Lydia Cannon
Is there anyone on the list who does 'digging' on the Cannons in Overton County; that is, descendants of John and Jemima (Minnie) Fite and their large family? I'd like to know more about where older Cannons are buried in the county. I can give more specifics if there's someone who is working on this family in Overton County Thanks. Virginia Cannon McKenzie
I am thankful to know the genealogy of my great-grandmother, Margaret Green Cannon (b ca 1856, d 1899, dau of Hardin Otha Green and Elliner Gordon, TN), but if she could come to dinner, I would ask her when and what became of her first husband, the father of her four children. He was Thomas Cannon (b ca 1854, son of John and Jemina (Minnie) Fite) and after the 1880 census is not heard of again; neither is his oldest son, Ferdinand, b 1872. I would ask her why she and the three younger children, Nora, Alice and Christopher Columbus (my grandfather) moved to Wabash County IL around 1890. I'd like to hear her relate the story of her life, I'd have so many question to ask.
I would give a lot to know what she looked and sounded like!
Blessings on all and happy Thanksgiving.
Virginia Cannon McKenzie
I would invite my 2nd great grandfather Jeremiah Walker Cannon. I believe he was the pilot of the Civil War torpedo boat "The David". Wouldn't he be able to tell some great stories! The David was a manned torpedo that was partly submersed and would ram the Union ships in the Charleston Harbor.
He was born about 1825 in South Carolina and died in 1881 in Charleston. I have not been able to determine who his parents were, although there is a woman named Mrs. HE E Cannon buried in the same plot at Magnolia Cemetery. She is 25 years older, so I presume it is his mother. I don't know if HE. E. were her initials or her husband's. There is no other information on her death certificate, nor does the cemetery have any thing else. Jeremiah was married to Hettie or Esther Thrower from Lancaster County, South Carolina.
Lucy Stewart
I would like to invite my g-g grandfather Frank D.
Cannon b: July 1876 to dinner. I'd like to ask him who
his father is. In 1900 his census from Scott township
in Mississippi county, Arkansas indicates that his
father was born in Texas, his mother born in Tennessee
and he was born in Arkansas. So, was his father born
in the 1850s somewhere in Texas? Was he a civil war
soldier from Texas that settled in Arkansas after the
war? It's funny, though, I've had little or no luck
matching up any cross references for a Cannon of this
description in the 1880 census. Frank as a 6? year
old, I think, pops up as a step son to an Andrew J.
Kane in Shelby, TN in 1880. If this is the correct
Frank, what happened to his father? Boy, I could fill
up this email with a million questions I'd like to
ask, but none more important to me than his father's
name and lineage.

I would invite Mary "Polly" CANNON who was my 4th Great Grandmother.
Polly, as she was always known (it is written that way on her tombstone,
which I have a picture of), married John CHAMPION in Mercer County, Kentucky
23 November 1826. She was born 26th of March 1773 (place unknown) and died
in Knox County, Illinois where her daughter, Ruth, moved after she married
William McMURTRY in Crawford County, Indiana. Ruth's brother, Thomas, who
married Artemesia MILES also moved to Knox County. I would ask her which
others of her children migrated with her "west" and who stayed in
Kentucky.or Indiana.
I would like to ask her how long it took and the hardships they encountered.
I would tell her about a journal that Verna Henderson wrote
I would ask her "where" her Father, Robert CANNON was born and also what was
her Mother's last name. I know her first name was Elizabeth .
I would ask her if the young woman named Mary CANNON (1808 - 1829) who is
buried at Pleasant Hill (where the Shaker Village is) was her daughter and
how she died.
I know the family genealogists in Knox County said Polly was very religious
and at one time, was a member of the Shakers and I would like to talk about
her faith and what she believed in. I'd like my daughters and Grandchildren
to hear her stories as we talked after dinner.

I would like to invite my ggg grandfather, Andrew Jerome Cannon and his wife Mary Rose (Schlatre/Slater/Slaughter), who married April 1835, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana.... so I could find out exactly who her parents where and where they came from! And, to learn a little more about the lives and customs from Ireland to Louisiana.

I would invite John F. Cannon of Frederick and Warren County, Virginia
1830-1854 and then from Wirt County, West Virginia until after 1884. He
was born in Virginia in 1805. He doesn't have a mother or a father or
siblings. We know he was a "paymaster to the postmasters". He posted
$10,000 dollars bond but he never owned land in either place. He served
on a jury, was tried in civil court and got a special US Congressional
pension. But he is an orphan. Perhaps at dinner he would share just a
hint or two.....

Thanks listowner for such a creative idea.
I would invite my 4xgrandfather, John CANNON. He was born circa 1760,
we
believe in SC, as he lived there for births of his children before
emigrating to
KY circa 1800.
He lived at a very interesting time in America's history and one that
did not
leave behind many records for us. Would like to know what role he
played in
the American Revolution, if any and I believe he would know which
generation
came over from the "old country", and that he would know exactly "which
old
country" they came from!!
Thanks and looking forward to everyone else's posting,

I would like to have Thanksgiving with Malinda Ganus
Cannon. She was living in Robinson County, Tenn. in 1850 and after that she
and her family, including her husband, William Cannon are found in Christian
County, Ky., along with their children. I don't know where Malinda came
from or where William came from. I have been looking for them and their
parents for a long time, but so far without success. I could ask her about
her family and about Williams family! What a wonderful conversation we
could have!!

How I wish it were possible to do just that, invite one of my Cannon
ancestors to Thanksgiving Dinner!!!!!
I would so much like to invite my great-grandfather, James E. Cannon to
dinner. He was born in April 1834 and married Catherine Van Horn in 1868. They
lived in Gilmer County, West Virginia. They are buried in Otterbein Cemetery,
Gilmer County. His grave marker indicates that he was a preacher. Census
records indicate that they always lived near or with other relatives. I wonder if
he was a circuit rider, and I would love to hear about those days and his
adventures. (If he was a circuit rider, there must have been many.) My dad use
to talk of the times when he was only a small boy about the turn of the
century, (19th to 20th) he told of the wild animals of that area.
I would also ask my great grandfather about his folks and where they came
from. Were they Mulungeons as are many of the folks of Appalachia. When did his
line of Cannons first come to this country, and from where?
And I would like for him to tell me about his only son, my grandfather. Who
was the young lady that his only son married and became my grandmother? It
is said she was 1/2 Native American Indian. What else can he tell me about
them. He and Cathereine lived with them for a while according to the census.
What was she like.
And I would like to know what he thinks of this country now. Is he
disappointed, or is he proud of it? It would be so wonderful to exchange opinions and
make comparisons about life then and now.
Gladys in WV (formerly a Cannon)
I would invite my Gr.Grandmother Annie Cannon from R.I.,born c1845 and her father John Cannon born c 1823
The reason is;I havnt been able to find any other ancestors in this line.I know John married a Connor but thats it.They came from down South or Scotland.
What an interesting evening that would be.
