In the January 2003 Old Pendleton District Newsletter on page 60 in G. Listers, in hopes of helping in this research on William CANNON in SC I am
here posting the entrees I have from the Royal Land Grant Index for SC in the
surname CANNON. I will give you all the William entrees, even though we know
he was not old enough to get land until abt 1772, just on the chance that his
father was also named William. (a memorial is a recording showing intent to
pay taxes)
1756 05 July plat 150 acres frk of Broad & Saludy Rivers
1764 10/25 grant 150 acres Indian Creek
1764 11/06 plat 150 acres Craven Co.
1764 11/22 memorial 150 acres Indian Cr. between Broad & Saludy
1765 vs Richard FOWLER, Sr. Judgement Roll
1765 vs Charles McBRIDE Judgement Roll
1765 6/21 grant 150 acres Berkeley Co.
1765 7/15 memorial 150 acres on Enoree Cr. Berkley Co.
1767 11/24 W'm. & wife to Sam TAYLOR lease & release
1767 2/17 grant 150 acres Craven Co.
1767 4/01 memorial 150 acres between Broad & Saludy
1772 10/14 plat 100 acres Granville Co.
1773 Wm. & wife to Wm. TURNER lease and release
1774 10/14 grant 100 acres Granville Co.
1775 4/21 memorial 100 acres Russell's Cr. Granville Co.
1776 audit
1798 Wm. Cannon & Wm. JERVIS vs Basil POUIRE ....judgement
There are two records that can be researched from this:
1. the land grant petitions for all these grants, especially the 1772
(the size of these grants on headrights all show no large families)
2. the audit of 1776 means that there was a claim made against the new
American
government for repayment of goods and services and/or money that was lent
on behalf of the revolutionary cause...other than military pay. I
ordered one of
these in a different surname I am researching and it had lots of
info...well worth
the effort
Hope this helps, and if anyone wants the info on any other SC CANNON
1750-1800, I will post whatever is on the index.
best to you all,
Janice (Cannon)
Bart, thank you so much for going to this trouble for us all......proving
once again that listers are very generous people!!
I hope that after we have all had a chance to read this in detail we can have
some discussion on the list as to how it might affect our other SC CANNONs.
I look forward to hearing from others who are more knowledgeable than I am
re: this time period.
thanks to all,
Janice (Cannon)
Hello Bart,
I am very interested in the data that you have.. My Mailstation cannot handle attachments, in fact they really mess up my email delivery.
Also, does anyone on the list know WHO Cannon Airforce station in New Mexico is named for?
Thanks .gijoeww2

Hi Joyce,
I can not verify that the Washington Co, TN William Cannon born 1752 NY was truly in TN by 1780. That is Zella Armstrong's theory. She feels he was the first TN Cannon according to a 1942 Chattanooga newspaper column she wrote.
The South Carolina Cannon I am most interested in is actually the Benjamin Cannon listed in the 1790 Census as living in Camden County with a half dozen children in his household. The Camden Historical Society can find no information on this man.
My theory is that he may be the Benjamin of 1740 Goochland Co, VA. The first son of Jeremiah Cannon and Elizabeth Elam Cannon. This Cannon line had been in VA since the 1650s and probably not associated with the Staten Island Andreis Canon line even though it is the theory of Zella Armstrong that all East TN Cannons are related to the William Cannon of Marion's Men.
I can attach my transcription of the Pension Application of William to an e-mail if you are interested.

Bart, I am getting more and more interested in having a copy of this
William's RW Pension application too. I don't think the list can take
attachments...is that correct? Even so, my old computer couldn't accept it.
Is it possible to get a photocopy by snail-mail? It is so seldom that any RW
CANNON documents are available.
Thanks, Bart, I will gladly pay the postage......

Dear List,
I have converted my attempt at transcribing William Cannons pension
application into plain text so no attachment is needed. I have been
unable to decipher many of the words in the document. Especially the
names of the generals and locations in South Carolina. Maybe one of you
with knowledge of SC geography and military history can help me make the
corrections.
1832 REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION of
WILLIAM CANNON of WASHINGTON COUNTY TENNESSEE
Transcription by Benjamin Bartlett Cannon 5th, 1999
State of Tennessee )
) First Circuit
Washington County )
Be it remembered that on this fourteenth day March 1836 personally
appeared before the Honorable Samuel Powel Judge of the first circuit
now setting as a court of law be for said County William Cannon aged
eighty four years having no fixed residence is part of his time with his
children and has been part in Washington County and who first being duly
sworn doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain
the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 1832 that he entered the
service of the United States under the following named officers and
served as herein stated. Lived at the time and long before he was
residing in South Carolina being principally reared there and at the
time that the British were in possession of Georgia and about to attack
Charleston S.C. in obedience to the orders of Genl Rutledge a call was
made for men and amongst others this test was drafted to perform a tour
of duty and was commanded by Genl Dencalen (?) under where the matters
were first that he was with Lexington at the engagement and captured at
Charleston and after Lexingtons surrender declarent was taken prisoner
by the British and was put on board of a prison ship with many others
and then was kept confined for near 3 months when he and four others in
the night at the risk of life when the guards were below saterd (?) the
boat and made to shore being in the Harbor of Charleston and succeeded
in getting to Genl Marions who was encamped at Woekamaugh.
His time of entering the service was 1779 he thinks early in the spring
of his best recollection entering for nine months however he was one of
the troops raised under Genl Rutledges order when the State of South
Carolina was about to be invaded and he served under Lin eden until his
defeat and was prisoner for three months. when he made his escape and
fell in with Marion who was up the country engaged with the Tories.
That in the ensuing year he was drafted to go against the British where
a March across toward Virginia and put under Captain McDannco of Genl
Marions command and served under Marion was under him at Cheveance
Shille an Vancoces and easer can against the Tories. Served that time
four months. He states furthermore that he served two years on the
revolution but his first tours he cannot recollect so as to set them
forth. The last tour he was wounded and had his leg broken at the
surprise (?) of Walbourgh South Carolina. He states that he can only
set forth specifically thirteen months, but his memory is now so gone
and his infirmity great that he cannot give the first services with
precision so as to swear to them, the two on which he was so severely
(?) distinguished (?) by suffering has mia all an umpression which death
only can offer that at Charleston under Genl Leniolein, of when he was
imprisoned that at Souter under Marion when he was wounded and had his
leg broken that he has now no documentary evidence having test his
discharge which he recvd (?) from Marion and not having been discharged
by Leneorla was on account of his being taken prisoner.
He hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension except the present and
declares that his name is not on the roll of the injury of any state
that he knows of no one by whom he can establish his services and the
reason of his delay in making application is that he is virtually blind
and unable to get out of the house except as he is lead.
That one person known to him and he to him and by where he can establish
his report other for service there being no mention of the Gospel in his
Vicinity by where he can establish the same that he was born in the
State of New York in the month of January 1752 according to the record
of his age in a bible which he is unable to read, but is so confirmed by
these who can that he served in S Carolina to the close of the
Revolution and then served to Tennessee where he has ever since
resided.

Could you also send that to the list? I would be interested in William's

Bart,
My Cannon line goes back to James and Juretta Cannon of Laurens Co, SC.
James was born ca 1797/98.
The only Cannon on the 1790 Laurens Co., SC census was a William Cannon. He
doesn't show on the census of 1800 or thereafter. SC is a state that before
1790 unless you were wealthy enough to have land records, marriage records,
etc., you appear lost forever. I have been unable to find anything about
this William Cannon, but feel he is my James Cannon's father and maybe died
just before or after James was born. However, there is no widow Cannon on
the later censuses either.
There were plenty of Cannons in the 1700s in Newberry and Spartanburg,
SC. Many of these moved on to Ga, Tn, Ala, Tx, Ark, and other states.
If your William was born in 1752, he would have been
48 in 1800 and 80 in 1832. I wonder if he is on the 1840 pensioners census
in TN? He likely was living with a dau or son and family. He couldn't have
been my James' father, but I wonder if he may be his grandfather, however,
you say your William was in NC by 1780s. If the William listed on the 1790
census is my James' father and he died in 1797/98, then his widow could have
remarried before 1900. My James' children were named Nathan (my line), John
Bowman, William N., Pinckney, Jane, Elizabeth, Caroline, and James.
I have a lot of the Newberry and Spartanburg Cannon and see several
Williams, but none with your 1752 date.

Hello,
Rev. William A. Cannon I am looking for was born in Jefferson County, TN in
1841 and Died in Mattoon, IL. Coles County. His parents was Isaac Barton
Cannon and Jane W. Palmer. Thanks for any help. Paula Cannon
Vicky - Unfortunately, I do not know what his middle name was. The Gibson County, TN census lists him as 35 years old and born in TN. He disappears from the county tax list there in 1854. I don't know if he died or moved somewhere else. I do not know who his parents were. It's possible that he was married at least three times.

One of the perplexing Cannons who may be important in my clan is William
Cannon who stated in his RevWar Pension Application in 1832 that he was
born in New York in 1752 and moved to South Carolina where he served
with Marion's Men in the Rev War. He was held for a short time aboard a
British prison ship in Charleston Bay. He escaped by jumping overboard.
By the 1780's he was living in western North Carolina and later in the
equivalent part of TN where he died sometime after 1832.
If he really was born in 1752 New York he may have been from the line of
1650 Staten Island huguenot Andreis Canon. One of his grandchildren was
John Cannon who owned shipping vessels that sometimes docked in
Charelston.
Whose line claims this William Cannon? I have never seen him mentioned
in the list.

How are you related to Cannon? I have Burt kin who are. gijoe
--------------------------------------------------------------
Elizabeth Cannon married John Carraway III in Princess Anne Co., VA - some researchers say before 1698. I need proof of her parents. Some say they were Edward Cannon and Mary Martin; others have said Edward Cannon and Elizabeth Martin.
This is Elizabeth Cannon Carraway's lineage, according to some folks:
Daughter of Edward and Mary Cannon - in Edward's will dated 21 Sept. 1701, proved 5 Nov. 1701, he names daughter as Elizabeth Cannon {under age 16} and not Elizabeth Carraway which he would have if she was married at the time. John Carraway did witness this will.
Edward was son of Thomas Cannon and Elizabeth Cornick.
Thomas was the son of the immigrant Edward Cannon and his 2nd wife Sarah. Thomas is named as her son in Sarah's will - he was born in 1653/1654. I doubt that Thomas would have been married before the age of 18, so his son Edward couldn't have been born before 1671. The same would hold true for Edward - he wouldn't have had a child before 1689.
Any help with this would be most welcome and appreciated.
