Hi, everyone.
In reference to the Samuel Cannon Will proved 16 May 1791. He states that he
lives in Newberry Co. This would mean that the will was written by at least
1785 when Newberry Co. was formed.
In reference to the other e-mail re: this Samuel Cannon research....the Tygar
River granted land was sold by his widow, Lydia Cannon, in 1772.
So, by reason of deduction, the Samuel who wrote the will while living in
Newberry Co.(after it's formation in 1785) could not have been the one who
died leaving Lydia a widow by 1772.
If my reasoning is correct, then there were, in fact, two Samuel Cannons
beginning in SC in the 1750s.
Please, if anyone has comment, or further research to add light to this, I
would love to hear from you.
STILL HUNTING!!!
Janice (Cannon)
Hello, everyone. Double listing again in hopes of help. Let me just explain
what I am looking at and see what you all think.
In my quest to figure out if there were two Samuel Cannons receiving land
grants in the 1750's...or just one Samuel.
1754 Plat for 100 acres on Cannon's Creek--granted 1756. In the grant it
states that the land must be cleared one acre per 500 in three years or build
a dwelling house, and keep a flock of 5 head of cattle per 500 acres.....or
in proportion....etc.
There is an earlier grant made to a Samuel Cannon on Tygar River, Anson Co.,
(NC at that time) in 1753. This land was held and sold by Lydia Cannon to
William Lee in 1772.
My question is: were they strict in having the requirements of the grant
fulfilled? Or was it possible to hold on to a grant for 20 years while you
are living somewhere else? This could make it possible for just one Samuel
to have both these pieces of property.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Janice (Cannon)
Janice,
Anson Co., NC included at least part of the present day Lancaster Co.,
where I believe the Tyger river is, in the 1700s. I am not sure of the date
the state boundaries were changed, but I have it somewhere in my files.
Newberry Co. would not have been part of Anson Co., as it is further
south just below Laurens Co., SC. Do you not show anything where the land
in Anson Co. was sold? It is very possible that Samuel and Lydia moved from
around Lancaster down to Newberry, selling the original granted land in
Anson Co. Or, they may have just left the land.
A John Cannon and sons came to Spartanburg Co., SC in the late 1700s. I
believe one of his sons was a Samuel. I have all this family's data sent to
me by
another researcher. Will have to locate and look over it. Will let you
know what I have.

Hi everyone, I am double listing this in hopes someone can help.
In have the Royal Land Grant Index for all SC Cannons. It shows:
1753 Samuel Cannon is granted 240 acres on Tygar River, Anson Co., NC (this I
assume later became SC)
1772 Under Lydia Cannon heading there is William Lee, Memorial for 240 acres
on Tygar River, Anson Co., NC, summarizing a chain of title to a grant to
Samuel Cannon of 21 Aug 1753. (Memorial means recording with intent to pay
taxes)
1754 Samuel Cannon granted 100 acres on Cannon's Cr., Newberry Co. I have
the plat and grant for this property, and it is bounded on one side by John
Cannon's land.
Question: can this be the same Samuel Cannon if he received different sizes
of land? If we apply the head-count rule to grants then why did he only
receive 100 acres on Cannon's Creek if he had qualified earlier for a larger
grant?
OR....were there actually two different Samuels both having wife named Lydia
as the 1791 will proved says. And the sale of the Tygar River land in 1772
by Lydia would indicate a much earlier death for Samuel than when the will
was proved, if it is just one Samuel.
Another interesting thing is in the 1791 Samuel will there is no mention of
the Cannon's Cr. property, only land that was obtained from other grantees.
Is there perhaps a Samuel Cannon will missing that is for a possible 2nd
Samuel on Tygar River?
Have I confused everyone?? Ever since I received the Land Grant Index last
year I have wondered about these two Samuel grants.
Thanks for your help!!!
