Hello Fran Hays
Have you any obits for Ziba Cannon or his spouse or children ? They can be
very helpful. And have you checked the 1780, 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830,
1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, & 1920 Census records for
his family and any other Cannon families living in the same counties ? You
can check with the cemetery ask if they have any records for him and his
family. Sometimes they do have very helpful information sometines they do
not. And Please continue to repost every month, eventually someone will see
a connection they may have missed.
Enjoy the Quest!
Don Cannon

I will be at the Archives in Columbia on Saturday during the SCGS Workshop.
I had planned to check on some Cannon wills then, however, at present it is
not open to general public on Saturdays due to the $ crunch for SC
government. Hopefully they are opening for this occasion.
My Cannon's go back to James and Juretta Cannon of Laurens Co., SC which is
just above Newberry Cannon where so many Cannons settled. It seems none of
my Cannon's left a will. They were dirt poor and didn't own land except
maybe for James and Juretta. I have a 1883 map of Laurens which shows
Juretta (Mrs. Cannon) on it. James died sometime between 1870 and 1880.
Their children were: (taken from census):
Elizabeth
James
NATHAN (my g grandfather) b. 1843
John Ransom
Capers Bowman (b. abt 1836 & died Spotsylvania, VA 8/5/1864)
Pinckney
Benjamin

South Mountain, MD)

I am looking for and descendants of Samuel Thomas Cannon. He wrote this
in 1908 in reply to a history he found in the Standard
A Point in History
By Samuel Thomas Cannon
Augusta, Maine, October 23, 1908
To the editor of the Standard:
Will you kindly give me space in your paper to make a correction which I
have read in the recent history of Mattapoisett and "Old Rochester?" On
page 283 is the following paragraph:
Ebenezer Cannon, born about 1750, the great grandfather of
Dr. David H. Cannon, was another old builder. His yard was at
Cannonville, so named from him."
This must be an error, my father's name was also Ebenezer
Cannon, he learning his trade, as master ship builder of Dr. Cannon's
grandfather, Eliakim Cannon, serving an apprenticeship of seven years,
and later purchased the Cannonville property laid out two or three
Streets and owned and occupied the shipyard there some five years. This
gave the little village its name, and the writer was the first male
child born there. My father carried on the business previous to this
purchase, and subsequently in all some 25 years and built many vessels
for New Bedford and Nantucket parties and also for Esquire Meigs of
Mattapoisett, a man of large wealth, father or Loring Meigs. It is not
strange that an error of the kind referred to occur in this work as no
less than five generations had an Ebenezer in the family. Allow me to
say in closing that the history is finely written and exceedingly
interesting to me.
If this person looks familiar to you please contact me. I know that he
was married to Ada P Morton. I do have his Ancestors.
Hi, everyone, since I haven't been able to get all the 18th cent. SC Wills
together yet, I am wondering if you would do me a favor? I have a John
Cannon with the oddest kidlist....Israel b. SC 1795, Jemima b. SC 1797,
Perryman b. SC 1800, Naomi b. ?......they are all listed in Caldwell Co. KY
marriage records 1816-22. Would y'all look on whatever wills and/or family
records you have and see if you have any of these names? I would greatly
appreciate your time for me.
Thanks, Janice (Cannon)
There is a researcher at the SC State Archives who has a message on the SC Genforum that he will do "quick free lookups". Maybe you could contact him about making the copies of the wills for you. He is David Kyle Rakes - barakes(a)juno.com
Hi, everyone, I am the list member who wants to chart all the 18th cent. SC
Cannons. I have contacted the Charleston Co. Public Library and they have 28
Cannons on their Will index. Their regulations do not allow them to fill
such a large order for me as I am on the West coast.
Here's the big favor.....is there anyone close enough to Charleston who is
willing to go and obtain photocopies of these wills? I will pay for the copy
charges and mailing expense to have them sent to me.
I will then type them in alphabetical order (to be fair) into the mailing
list. As you know these SC Cannons can be very confusing and hopefully this
will be a start for us all to find our SC roots.
Thanks for your kind help in the past. I know this is asking a lot but if we
all pitch in we can get these Cannons sorted out. Also, if anyone already
has a copy of a Cannon will from the 18th cent and into early 19th that would
help. Our list Mom cautions me that we must use photocopies of the originals
NOT copies taken from an already published book.
best regards, Janice (Cannon)

Hi Janice,
I would be delighted to help sort out the Cannon's. I have been working on that same thing, only a few years later. I am making progress, but slowly and not always in the correct direction.

Hi, everyone, I am wondering if anyone has every put together a chart of all
the Cannons in SC in 1700's. I have the complete royal land grant index and
would like to work with anyone interested in such a project.
Would really help to see who was where and when.....sorting them out in your
head is IMPOSSIBLE!
thanks, Janice (Cannon)
