Christopher Columbus CANNON
Christopher Columbus Cannon is certainly to be classed with the leading pioneers and substantial citizens of Lake county. He now resides at New Pine Creek where he has a fine estate and does general farming and stock rasing. He was born on February 12, 1842, in Holt county, Missouri, the son of George W. and Mary A. Cannon. The father died in the Goose Lake valley aged eighty-three and the mother died here at the age of eighty. They have been members of the Methodist church for over sixty years. In 1853, the family came across the plains with ox teams the father being captain of the train. On the 30th day of May in that year, they crossed the Missouri river and on October 26th of the same year they landed on Salt creek in Polk county, Oregon, where Mrs. Cannon's father, William Robinson, was living. He had came across the plains in 1847. In 1854, Mr. Cannon removed to the Umpqua valley and there built a mill which was burned down during the Rogue River war. In 1861, our subj!
ect began prospecting in the promising fields of western Oregon, Idaho and Washington and was well acquainted with all the leading camps. Then he returned to Lane county whither his parents had come and in 1869 he came to Goose Lake valley, locating at the mouth of Lassen creek. He built his cabin on June 14, 1869 and is supposed to be the only man now living here that helped to celebrate the 4th of July in that year. In 1871, the parents came and remained here until their death. Our subject hired to a Mr. Snyder to operate a sawmill and for seven years labored in that capacity, receiving as "wages" one hundred dollars per month. Then he engaged in farming and stock raising and several years ago sold his ranch in Lassen creek. He now has about three hundred acres of fine land adjoining the town of New Pine Creek, part of which is located on his land. His farm is all under cultivation, has three fine dwellings and three good barns, besides many other improvements and is one o!
f the valuable estates of the county.
In 1887, Mr. Cannon married Miss Blanche Follette, the daughter of Captain E. and Christina Follette. They formerly came from Iowa, to California and then settled in this country, being now residents of New Pine Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon have one child, Olive Blance. Mr. Cannon and his wife and daughter are all members of the Methodist church and are highly respected people. As early as fifteen years of age, our subject started out for himself and has made his entire holding by reason of his industry and thrift. He had the privilege of assisting to care for his parents in their declining years and was very faithful in all his duties. It is very interesting to know that when Mr. Cannon first came here, he was considerable of a nimrod and had great experiences in slaying elk, deer, bear, cougar and so forth. He has met and slaughtered many of the genuine grizzly and has had some very narrow escapes. On one occasion, he was very nearly killed by a cougar but he always managed !
to find a way out and generally brought trophies of slaughtered game.
John,
Upstate SC was mostly Indian country until the mid 1700s when so many
people came down the Great Wagon Rd to Va., NC and then upstate SC. They
were from PA, MD and possibly NY. At that time the upper part of SC
(Lancaster, Cheraw, and most of the present day border towns/ cities were
actually included in NC. The state line was changed at a later date (don't
have year handy). Then, the King of England in mid 1760s, wanted more or a
barrier between the Indians and the coast (Charles Town), so he gave a lot
of land grants in the upper State, presently areas in the Troy, Bradley,
Callison, SC areas and Donalds, Due West, Abbeville, Saluda and Edgefield
areas among others).
One example being a group of about 600 Germans who were stranded in
England in a 'ghetto' area by a man who had been trying to get a 200,000
acre grant in Nova Scotia. He persuaded these German people who had been
taxed and taxed again on their property to sell and go to Nova Scotia and he
would get them there. Well, his 200,000 acre grant didn't happen -
20,000+/- instead. He disappeared with these peoples money. The English
people knew of their misfortune and were trying to help them, but in the
meantime, there was a lot of sickness and death. When the King heard of
their misfortune,
he furnished three ships to get them to Charleston, SC and land grants. So
many acres for each man, each woman & child. Some of the families ended up
with 400/800 acres of land in upper SC. The man responsible for them when
they reached Charleston was to be certain no one stayed in the Charleston
area. Only one man (single) did. The first year was very rough and they
almost didn't make it. They had been housed in a large lodge while building
their individual cabins and clearing land to plant in the spring. They had
arrived in the winter during the coldest months. When a couple of the men
went back to Charleston to ask the government for more help, they were
refused. Records show that a traveling preacher wrote that the next year
when he came through their area, all was well and they must have had plenty
of food as they had insisted he dine with them.
However the land they settled on didn't prove to be the best and the
settlement sort of broke up and they expanded to the more fertile lands
nearby - Kirksey, Edgefield, Abbeville, Saluda, Newberry.
So at that point of time, some of them lived among the Cannons in Newberry
where one of the three Cannon brothers settled. There is a Cannon Creek
there today.
I had thought the three Cannon brothers spoken of all settled in SC, but
sometime ago, I remember reading that the other two settled elsewhere. I
believe it listed MD and not sure of the other state. I will have to look
up in my files which aren't readily available at present. In those files I
have a copy of the Thomas Cannon (MD) (b. abt 1620) line with a James and
Mary coming to Newberry, SC and some of their families. When I can get my
records together, I will post.
We have a lot of books on Newberry settements here at our Lib. I just
wish I had the time to go there and read, read, read, but it'll be another
year before I have that kind of time! (Can't wait!)
I hope this has not been too lengthy!

John Simpson CANNON was born c. 1856 in Tennessee and moved to Hempstead Co,
Arkansas as an infant with his parents Andrew Jackson Cannon and Malinda
Sawyer.
John Simpson CANNON was reportedly a medical doctor, as was his father, and
a brother.
There is a possibility that he is buried near West Fork or Greenland Ark.
near Sulphur City, Ark.
Any information on John and his family would be most appreciated.
I would like to know more about my great-great-uncle Jefferson S. CANNON.
He was born c. 1853 in Tennessee and came to Hempstead County, Arkansas
about 1857-58 as a child with his parents Andrew Jackson Cannon and Malinda
Sawyer.
Jefferson married Louisa J. about 1871 in Pike County, Arkansas.
They had the following children according to the 1880 Pike Co census:
Newton J. Cannon b: Abt. 1872
Emma L. Cannon b: Abt. 1874
Lenora T. Cannon b: Abt. 1876
Robert E. Cannon b: Abt. 1878
Jefferson S. Cannon was reportedly a medical doctor, as was his father,
Andrew Jackson Cannon. Any information on this family would be greatly
appreciated.
I would like to know more about my great-aunt, Malinda CANNON KOLB. She was
the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Cannon and Mary Ann Frances "Polly"
Robbins. Benjamin Franklin came to Hempstead County, Arkansas from
Tennessee c. 1857-58 as a child, with his parents Andrew Jackson Cannon and
Malinda Sawyer.
Malinda Cannon was born about 1868 in Arkansas.
She married Charles R. Kolb.
They had three sons:
Allie Carl Kolb 1886-1959
Erby Roy Kolb 1887-1970
Melvin Clyde Kolb 1898 - 1965
and two daughters, first names unknown.
One daughter married a Haley and the other married Bert F. Derden
Any information would be most appreciated.
Whenever Don puts his research on line, I just say"there he goes again",
but I still read it all hoping that some of my Southern CANNONs will be
there.
Keep up the good work, Don.

Hey Y'all,
In response to the suggestion to post our Cannons, I will post mine.
My Cannons arrived in Ascension Parish, LA in the mid-1840's from
Galway, Ireland. Records indicate that they came via either
Massachusetts, Maryland or Mississippi (can't read the census
handwriting). Maybe they will ring a bell with someone.
Martin Ansil Cannon, Sr. married the widow of his brother Marcelin,
her name being Maria Woods. After her death, he married Mary Jane
Fairbanks and then, Marie Fabien. Martin arrived in Louisiana just ahead
of his other brother, John Cannon, who was married to Catherine Maurin.
They were all from Galway, Ireland, according to the records. The
parents of these Cannon men were Lorence and Judith Canon (with one
"n"). There were possibly other siblings: Margaret and Thomas. I
think that Margaret married Dwight Woods, but have not verified this.
Thomas died in 1849, not long after arriving in Louisiana.
If these folks ring any bells with anyone, I would love to hear from
you. I would like to know what route they took to reach Louisiana, and
where in Galway they were from.
Happy Rooting!
Heidi
Hi
I have been researching the Cannon's in Arkansas for a couple of years with
no luck! My Grandfather was James Samuel Cannon and wife was Winnie Marie
Page. They lived in Bradford, White County, Ar. I believe that she came
from Peach Orchard, Clay County, Ar. And I think that he came from
Delaplaine, Ar.
They had five children. Two that died at very young ages. A boy named
Lester and a girl named Norma Marie. Also, Arvis Olen Cannon ( my father),
Elmer Cannon, and James Delmer Cannon. My grandfather, my father and Elmer
all worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. All are deceased now.
Thanks....hope someone is familiar with these names.

I recently subscribed to this Cannon line----guess what?? I received 40
emails of this feud with a few interesting ones in the middle and one from a
family member that I did not find until I had Deleted all of them. I work
the Kennon line and our ancestors would sign their name Cannon when Kennon
would be their official name, so don't forget to add the "Kennons" to your
search. The Kennons/Cannons are very assertive and in this case very
aggressive---the Scottish and Irish temper arises!!!!
