My ggg-grand father was George H. Cannon and he was born in CT in 1817. He
had moved to Cass County, Indiana by 1838. He was married to Martha Taylor
in NY. His parents were George Cannon and Elizabeth Hanford of CT.
The 1850 census of Cass county shows George H. Cannon's occupation as a
"druggist" who was b. in CT.
In an on-line biography of Ulysses Bristol it states that Mr. Bristol went
into the drug business and his partner was George H. Cannon who passed away
Oct 1874. They started this partnership after 1860. During this time they
lived in Tuscola County, MI.
George H. Cannon disappears from Indiana after 1850 and can not be found on
the 1860 or 1870 Indiana census. His son, my gg-grandfather, George W.
Cannon was listed as a railroad agent in Cass or Miami County, Indiana in the
1890s. George W. Cannon m. Margaret McBurney who was from PA and they may
have been in Wisconsin at the time of their marriage.
This Cannon family had connections to other Cannon relatives that owned or
were ship masters and other Cannon family members (Industrialist, LeGrand
Cannon) who had ties to the railroads. They moved around often.
Finally they can be traced back to Andries Canon who was in Staten Island, NY
by 1656. Andries Canon it is said was a Hugeunot who fled from France to
Holland then to England and from there to New Amsterdam (New York)
If anyone has a connection to this family I would like to here from you and
share my information. Other family names associated with this Cannon/Canon
family are:
LeGrand, Schermerhorn, Sands, Perry, Pearce, DeMarest, St. John, Mott.
The families are from NY, MA, RI, and CT

I guess it is time to re-up my CANNON family. William CANNON came to SC
from Virginia and settled in Pendleton District. By the time of the 1790
Census, I think he was deceased, but his (second?) wife, Anne CANNON was
living.
My ancestor was reared by the CANNON family, but "folklore" has it that she
was found on their doorstep. Whether she was or not, she was in his will as
Eleanor CANNON, his daughter. She married first about 1765, a HUDGENS,
possibly Ambrose or William. Secondly, she married Major Samuel TAYLOR
about 1768. Family tales say that some grandmother in this family weighed
about 400 pounds. What a weight problem!
Can we trace a family by their having a weight problem? This large lady was
possibly her mother, I don't know.
She is said to have fallen in a small branch (of a creek) and dammed up the
stream before they could get her up. Don't know if this was when she
died...

Modoc County, CA - Index to Federal Land Patents
California Land Patents Database
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) inherited the functions of the
General Land Office when it was established by Congress in 1946. The
California Land Patents Database, derived from General Land Office and
BLM information, contains deeds (primarily patents) issued by the United
States in the State of California between 1856 and 1995. While BLM has
been referred to as "the Nations record keeper" it is the National Archives
that actually keeps the files. The BLM, maintains diagrammatic plats known
as Master Title Plats, which depict lands which are owned by the United
States and lands which are patented. However, these plats do not have any
information about who the lands were patented to. That information as only
been available after tedious research, it is available now in this database.
The California Land Patents Database contains the following information for
each land transaction: date, location (township, range, section, meridian),
name of person the land was patented to, case type, conveyance type, county,
case number and the patent document identification number.
Using this information you can obtain copies of the patent file for $10 from
the National Archives at the following address:
Reference Branch (Lands)
National Archives
Washington, DC 20408
(202) 501-5428
You need to submit your request on a copy of Form 84. To get the form, send
an e-mail message to
inquire(a)nara.gov
In the body of the message, be sure to ask for Form 84 "Order for Copies of
Land Entry Files", tell them how many copies you want (get at least 2, in case
you make a mistake) and give your name and snail address so they can send you
the forms.
(Or you can send a snail mail letter to above address). Sending by e-mail takes
less than a week; by snail mail both ways takes about 2 weeks.

HI, my CANNONs are Andrew J. Cannon who married Mary Rose Slaughter. That
is all I have on them at this time. However, of their children, one was
Mary "Emma" Cannon who married Benjamin David Smith(b.Sept8,1858 in VA,
d.Nov 19, 1933 in LA). I believe in NC. They eventually moved to Baton
Rouge, Louisiana, where 8 of 9 children were born. Annie Lucy Smith was one
of them, my G grandmother. I am trying to get beyond Andrew and Mary Rose,
any help would be appreciated.

Hello List,
I'm new to the list. I have been reading all the e-mail it's good reading, but I don't know that much about the Lady I'm looking for. You all might not be abel to help me. But I'm going to ask anyway.
Margarett " Elizabeth " Cannon Crawley born 13/15 Aug.1878 in ??? died 22 Nov.1944 in Knoxville. Father was A. H. Cannon. Mother unknown She married on 02 Dec.1893 to James "Samuel" Martin Crawley. In the 1920 Census of Knox.Co.TN. This is what it says: Crawley, Samuel age ? wife: Margaret age 42, Daug. May R. age 20, Sons: Raymond age 18, Herbert age 17, Daugs. Nellie age 15, Elizabeth age 12, Grandson David Cannon age 7, Garandaughter Elizabeth Cannon 4 1/? and Grandson James Cannon age 2 7/12 . The grandkids are from IL. I don't know if this Margarett Elizabeth was married before or if she had kids out of wed-lock. Also I would like to know what A.H. stands for, he was Margaret's father.
Thank you for your time, Linda Wilder Sizemore
My great grandfather was Almon Cannon who was born in Georgia at
an unknown place and to unknown parents in 1812. He had a
brother, Elijah Cannon also born in Georgia at an unknown place
and to unknown parents in 1809. Their mother was born in South
Carolina. These brothers possibly had a younger sister,
Margaret. The three moved to Bedford County, Tennessee in the
early 1830s. The name Elijah Cannon was common in the family
John Cannon and Sarah Hammet Broderick of Spartanburg County, SC
after the Rev. War. I therefore think that my Cannons may be
common to that family.
My current leaning is that my 3 Cannons may have been children of
a William Cannon and wife Mary ___?___, who lived in DeKalb
County, Georgia. William Cannon died there about late 1829 or
early 1830. His widow Mary was head of household in the DeKalb
County Census records of 1830, 1840 and 1850. These census
records indicate that they had at least 5 other children other
than Elijah, Almon and Margaret. Three of these children have
been identified as John C. Cannon, William E. Cannon another son
may have been a Harrison Cannon. They also had a daughter who
married a Josiah Washington Cash in the early 1840s. Both the
daughter and her husband died after having 4 children leaving the
children as orphans before 1850. In the 1850 census Mary Cannon
was listed as 55 year old and born in South Carolina.
I think that it is possible that the father, William Cannon, had
brothers Henry Cannon and Thomas Cannon who both lived for a time
in Walton County, GA. In the 1840 & 1850 census records of
Walton County and elderly woman identified in the 1850 census as
Nancy A. Cannon, aged 83 and born in Virginia lived in the Thomas
Cannon household. This was probably the mother of Thomas. The
birthplace of Thomas was shown as South Carolina.
Henry Cannon married a Polly Martin in Clarke County, Georgia on
24 February 1808. They (and children) were listed in the 1820
Walton County, GA census.

This family is found in following locations according to census records:
1850 - Robertson Co. Tennessee
1860 - Christian Co. Kentucky
1870 - Christian Co. Kentucky
William Cannon Sr. had a sister Mary(Polly) who married Thomas Long.
Mary(Polly) and Thomas had a daughter Phoebe Ann Long . Phoebe married
her cousin, George Riley Cannon shown above. Phoebe and George were my

I believe William is connected to the Cannons from South Carolina but I
can't make the connection.
Any help would be appreciated.

Carol: I think it's a great idea to relist the family connections. Here's mine --
My Caroline Cannon was born in Eton, christened March 12, 1811 married William Burgess, born 1808 in East Sussex. They immigrated from Middlesex in about 1854 with their 4 children. They lived in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada for the rest of their lives.
Of the Cannons, I know very little. There is a possiblility that Carolines parents were Joseph and Caroline Cannon (Eton, Berks) and that Joseph and Caroline had 11 children as follows:
Richard christened 22 Mar 1807
Ann christened Jan 1809
Caroline christened 12 Mar 1811
Joseph christened 1 Apr 1813
Elizabeth christened 12 Jun 1815
Thomas christened 1 Apr 1817
Richard christened 13 Jan 1819
John christened 18 Mar 1821
Mary Ann christened 20 Jul 1823
Sarah christened 30 Oct 1825
Rebecca christened 10 Feb 1828
Although I have not persued it, it is said that the Cannons were 'horse racers' in England (Joseph, the father, was listed as a Waterman). Again, I have not persued it but some of the horse racers were said to have come to Canada as well.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

I am still seeking the parents of Jesse Cannon born about 1800 possibly
in SC or VA. There are Cannon's in the Spartanburg area with the same
naming patterns but I can't make a proven link. Jesse was married to
Tabitha ?
There was a Henry Cannon who appears to be his brother who was born
about 1809. Both were in the SC coastal county of Horry by about 1830. I
would appreciate any help linking him to his parents.
Thanks, Wanda
