I am unsure that John Cannon and Martha Alexander are James Cannon (1755)
parents.

I found it several years ago, got really excited, but after working on it
felt that there was no proof..can't remember why, but I discarded the premise.
I am including a family group sheet with places for James.

Interestingly, these folks do not come up with a "Cannon" search on the
Indiana State Marriages pre-1850 searchable database:
Rebecca Cannon m Sylvester Canady 6/8/837 Martin Co.
Susan Cannon m James Griffin 9/13/1837 Daviess Co.
Mary Cannon m Enoch Stone 9/8/1832 Daviess Co.
Sarah Cannon m John Burris 8/18/1848
Merry Cannon m Michael Hammersley
Jemima Cannon m John Mills (Miles) 4/16/1845 Martin
James Cannon m Catherine Richardson 1/11/1886
There was an additional James Cannon/Elizabeth Miles 8/2/1843 in Martin Co.
Could some of these be further children of James Cannon and Nancy Gibson ?

Here's a descendancy for James Cannon of Daviess Co. whose descendants
settled in both Martin and Daviess Co.. The names you mentioned are
bold-faced (as least for AOL Users). This format doesn't support places, but

I enjoyed reading the message from JCBrooks on the His and Hers file
cabinets. As I am the only one in the household here who enjoys this
research, my family has taken to calling it "digging up dead relatives".
On that note I have separated my file drawers by families and labeled
them "Rick's Dead Relatives" and "Mary Ellen's Dead Relatives".
Now that I find that I am hearing from many people with the same
surname via the internet who I am sure I am NOT or probably not related
to I decided I needed a way to keep their info separate from mine. And
so in front of each of my surname folders I have another manila folder
labeled "Other", i.e., "Other Bruski's" or "Other Cannons". The neatest
part of this is that several times it has turned out that an individual
was related to somebody else in one of my "other" folders and I was able
to put them in connection with one another! This has been pretty
rewarding for me--- even if I would rather find somebody that fit my own
"dead relative" file!

I would be interested in locations, also.
I believe that the William and Abarella CANNON (and children)
that I am searching for spent some time in Indiana. The names of
the children are similar to the ones I have been tracking. I think
there may be a connection.
I am specifically trying to find a Parthenia (or Theney)
CANNON. I notice that the list of marriages included a Thena
Cannon m. William Smith 5/26/1821. This could well be the
Parthenia that I am searching for. Any info would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: [CANNON] Two hints to organize genealogy paperwork
In a message dated 8/26/2000 4:00:50 AM Central Daylight Time,
CANNON-D-request(a)rootsweb.com writes: << Me too....been doing this for 35
years. I use a computer program, but it's
hard to control the paper. Get a bigger file cabinet! I have two..one of
His and one for Hers. >>
If you're anything like me, you have been wanting to get all this genealogy
paperwork organized for years. You have copies of obits, family charts,
pictures, birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, leads that need to
be worked, good articles that need to be read, forms, etc etc etc. And the
worst part is that more than once, I have re-done research because I forgot I
had already done it and couldn't lay hands on a document or copy.
HINT#1: To solve that, I created a spreadsheet which lists each person, with
columns for each type of document I hope to obtain for each... birth
certificate, marriage license, death certificate, obituary, and
miscellaneous. If I have obtained a copy of one of these documents, I put
and "X" or the date in that column, so I always know what I have already done
and what I still need to work on. Unfortunately, most of my spaces are blank
:-( Hint: Most of the genealogy programs will let you extract a list of all
your people that you can import into the spread sheet program, so that you
don't have to sit and type in all the hundreds or thousands of names you have
in your program. But if you're not automated yet, you can certainly do this
manually. Some genealogy programs have a place for you to note what source
documents you have, but I find this much easier.
HINT#2: But even if I never seem to find the time to sort and file all this
stuff, I can find everything I have now because of another little trick. It
is the best stop-gap measure I've found!
Maybe you have some stuff in 3-ring binders, come in plastic storage boxes,
some in file cabinets, some in shoe boxes? Well, for now, just leave
everything where it is, but build an index using a spreadsheet program.
There will be one line for each document. Your index must include at least
these three columns, but can include anything else you want (like date
obtained, received from, etc.)
1) type of document (obit, birth certificate, picture, land grant, etc)
2) name of person document is for (last name, first, middle)
3) location of document (shoe box #1, file cabinet drawer #3, etc)
After you get this all keyed in, you can sort your index into any order you
need. If you need a listing of everything in shoe box #1, sort on the
location column. If you want to see what all you have for Grandpa Joe Jones,
sort on the name column. And if you ever wanted to see a list of all the
obituaries you have copied, sort on the document-type column.
Hope this helps someone. You only have to do it once, then add to it as you
acquire more source documents. It does NOT get the stuff organized, but it
DOES put everything under your control, and It has literally saved my sanity
and given me much peace of mind!
Blessings,
Debra Claussen

Someone sent me detailed instructions about "How to Save to Folders" on your
computer...I'll paste it in below and hope it helps...just follow the
instructions ... even print them out if you have to and you'll have a neat
way to organize anything that comes to you via computer. Good luck...Jan
****************************************************************************
***********************
Jan,
I had the same problem until I conquered my fear of the computer.
When you create folders in Windows Explorer it is just like writing names on
paper folders and putting them in your file cabinet---when you move
documents into these folders you are organizing your research so you can
find it----you can drag and drop any new research document you create into
your RESEARCH folder--- and then you can organize all the other data you
have in your computer in the same manner. It is easier for me to spot my
main folders on the C drive if I type the folder name in Capital letters. I
created a folder named RESEARCH to store all my genealogy work in---another
named PERSONAL to store my letters to friends and family, etc. The simplier
the better---dont like my life or computer complicated.
To organize your genealogy research papers do the following
Print out these instructions and keep them by your keyboard.
1--In Windows 95---- open Windows Explorer
Click the hard drive "C"
place the mouse pointer on file--down to new---over to folder and click
click the the little "new folder" box NOT the picture of the folder until
it is highlighed and type RESEARCH in capital letters in the little box
2--Click the new RESEARCH folder in the left panel
then put the mouse pointer on file --new--folder and click
when little "new folder" box on right panel in Explorer appears--- click the
box NOT the picture of the folder-- and type in one of your surnames CHANEY
3--Repeat step 2 until you have a filebox for each of your surnames
4--Then click My Documents folder or the folder in the left panel where you
have your research documents stored now----
5--WHEN you find your research documents and they are showing in the right
panel of Explorer----
click the vertical SCROLL BAR in the left panel until your RESEARCH folder
is showing in the left panel of Explorer --but do NOT click RESEARCH
Click on the folder or document in the right panel that you want to move
into the Research folder and hold down the mouse button and drag it to the
left until it is directly on top of the new RESEARCH box --then drop it
there by releasing the mouse button.
6--Repeat step five until you have all your reseach documents moved into the
RESEARCH folder.
7--when you have finished moving all your research documents into the
RESEARCH box-- Click RESEARCH folder in the left panel ----they are now
visible in the right window and you can drag and drop the separate items in
the research folder into the surname folders that they apply to---
8--- You now have all your research for each surname in a main folder named
RESEARCH on the hard drive C----wasn't that fun----you just organized all
your research and now all your reseach is in one place in a folder called
RESEARCH on the hard drive C
--anytime you need to find your geanalogy research ---open windows Explorer
--click on C --then click the RESEARCH folder and the right panel opens
containing all the folders for each surname you are looking for----just
double click the one you want to open and it opens---just like magic---
I had the same problem ---never being able to find my material because I was
afraid to move things into folders in Windows Explorer.
I usually go to Explorer at end of the day and drag and drop my research
from My Documents into the RESEARCH folder so I dont have to switch between
My Documents and Research folders to find my old and new material.

My Cannons are Thomas and Jane Cannon. Thomas was born 20th May 1821 in West
Lydford, Somerset, England. He was the son of Stephen and Mary Cannon. Jane
was the daughter of Richard and Jane Ward and was born 10th February 1821
also at West Lydford. Thomas and Jane were married on 22nd January 1844
again at West Lydford.
Thomas and Jane had two children, William and Mary before immigrating to
Australia in 1849 on the "Lady Amhurst". During the voyage to Australia
another daughter, Elizabeth, was born. On arrival in Australia they settled
in the Muswellbrook area of New South Wales where they had another five
children, Francis, Jane, Alice, James and Emma.
Am hoping that someone out there might recognise someone.
