Does anyone know more, about the ancestors and / or about the descendants of Stratford
Canning 1744 - 1787? I am keen to corroborate or correct and to expand what I think I
know about this family branch.
The situation is complicated because there were several people around named Stratford
Canning at about this time. My present information leans heavily on an old copy I
borrowed of Burke's Extinct and Dormant Peerages, but I am not sure how reliable that
is. Maybe someone out there has independtently sourced data from family records or old
surviving parish records? Anyhow...
Here's what I think I know. Probably:

Notes for ELIZABETH CANNING:
It would appear that she grew up with her cousin, George Canning (George Canning 1770 -
1828), seven years her senior and a future prime minister of Britain. His own mother, an
actress, had been considered unsuitable as a parent after the death of his father, who had
already been disinherited by his own father as a result of ... that unsuitable marriage.

Notes for RT HON STRATFORD CANNING:
Stratford de Redcliffe, Stratford Canning, Viscount,
1786-1880, British diplomat. He entered (1807) the foreign office under the aegis of his
cousin, George Canning. Sent (1808) to Turkey, he negotiated the Treaty of Bucharest
(1812) between Turkey and Russia. He served in Switzerland (1814-18), at the Congress of
Vienna, and in Washington (1819-23), where he negotiated concerning disputes arising from
the War of 1812. In Turkey again (1825-29, 1831), he helped settle the frontier problem
with Greece. After a period in Parliament he returned (1842) to Turkey, remaining with
interruptions until 1858. Stratford exercised enormous influence over Sultan Abd al-Majid,
but the documentary evidence does not support the belief of his contemporaries that he
encouraged Turkish intransigence in the face of Russian demands in 1853 and thus brought
on the Crimean War. He appears rather to have counseled moderation and attempted to avert
the war. He was created a viscount in 1852.

name, though at the time of writing I do not know whether or not he was still alive at
this time.
