Pam, in the 1901 Census, there is Moses Canning, Journalist in Douglas, Isle of Man, also
a Mary Canning age 44 born in England, and a young male, Martineau Canning aged 13 a
student. No other Cannings, male or females there in 1901. Now...there is a marriage of
a Moses Canning and a Mary Ann E. Andrews registered in the Sept 1891 Registry of Barrow
in Furness which is on the border of Cumbria and Lancashire . This may not be the same
Mary as found as Mary Canning in Douglas and she may not be the mother of Martineau.
But...you gave an unusual name for another daughter, Strappini. VERY unusual name and so
is Martineau... do you know when she was born? or the approximate years. If the Mary in
the 1901 census was 44, she probably was not having any more children...so where was
Strappini? Perhaps she was already dead. I did not find any of these two children's
birth records in free BMD records, and did not find either Moses who was also 44 birth
records in Family Searc!
h. Have you found anything more?
I will check on a death of Mary Canning. Do you have a birth certificate for Gertrude?
