Forgive me that I seem to have missed out on the start of an exchange or if I tell you
only what you already know. But George Canning (PM)'s Canning grandfather was
Stratford Canning 1703 - 1775. He was born and died in Ireland which is not always,
alas, the easiest place to find primary source material. However, his marriage in Dublin
in 1734 to Letitia Newburgh appears to be born out by surviving records (albeit variously
spelled). They had three sons, one of whom, famously (infamously?) the old man
disinherited permanentaly and one of whom (my own ancestor) he may have disinherited at
least temporarily.
I have seen on web sites two sisters for this fearsome patriarch, named Mary and Abigail.
I do not know if one of these would be your ancestor. I have no idea concerning the
quality of the source for these sisters (who presumably would be recorded as daughters of
George Canning and Abigail Stratford). If anyone out there has agreed them to parish
records, will data, or something similarly firm, I'd love to know of it. If you
yourself track back to either of these, I would also be interested to know details, both
out of of the general inquisitiveness which is one of the drivers of this genealogical
obsession and because it would make us something like sixth cousins. Approx.
Happy searching
Charles
