George and Henry Canning were two different persons of the same surname, who served on the
CSS SHENANDOAH, and were not related at all. Despite what some so called researchers
want to claim, George P. Canning had definitely died aboard the SHENANDOAH on October 30,
1865, and was most certainly buried at sea. At least two persons, in online web sites,
have tried to claim that Canning's death was faked, and that he was put ashore, and
died in France, but this is absurd rubbish, and mere speculation. All the journal
accounts, the medical log, as well as statements from many of those on the Confederate
cruiser state clearly that Canning had died on that date. Anyone who tries to imply that
Canning's death was faked is thus stating that all the officers and crew of the
SHENANDOAH were in on this faked death, and thus being totally dishonest, even those in
positions of responsibility, such as surgeon Lining, thus placing his medical credentials
at risk. This claim is tot!
ally baseless, and further evidence that it is so is the fact that, if he died in France,
no one seems to be able to locate George P. Canning's grave. No doubt the conspiracy
theorists will make up their usual amount of excuses for all these facts.
I state, once again, and with utmost finality, that George P. Canning died on the
SHENANDOAH, and was buried at sea, the next day. All the existing journals, as well as
the logs, and everyone else who wrote an account, even one of the enlisted men, state that
as a fact.
Everyone is also aware that not all persons who are let in on a secret can keep such a
secret forever, and if the death was faked, it would have been revealed as such a lie,
long, long ago. Besides, I believe that the majority of the personnel on the vessel were
honest in most ways, and many of these honest persons would not have wanted to be in on
such a fabrication. To say that the entire crew were involved is to state that all these
Confederate sailors were dishonest and deceitful, which is false. The only ones who
indulge in such dishonesty are those who fabricate their great grandfathers name, and
Confederate service, and those who pass around altered documents as the genuine article,
and then use that altered document to obtain VA grave markers.
