Hi there Bernadette,
Not sure if this gets to you or not .. but I'm doing some research on the
'Cannings' of Ballyvary at the moment.
My aunt was Patricia Canning (nee Gilboy) who married Joe (Thomas Joseph) Canning in the
late 1950's.
Anyway, I came across your query re Francis Canning and hir father 'Owen' and in
my research I found the marriage of a MARY Canning to a Thomas Hopkins for the 1st. March
1868 in Knockmore, Ballina, County Mayo.
Her Father is listed as 'OWEN CANNING' on the Marriage details and is more than
likely a sister to your ancestor 'Francis'
In the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census, there is a family of HOPKINS living in ' PARK'
Ballyvary
In 1901 the residents are
Thomas Hopkins Head
Mary Wife
Children - Michael, Maria, Maggie, Patt, Bridget, Thomas, James and John
In 1911
Thomas at this stage is a Widower
Children - Bridget, Thomas, John and James
Hope this helps, and if I come across anything else, I'll let you know.
BTH what details do you have on the marriage of Francis Canning to Frances Barr ? Were
they married in Ireland or the UK ?
Thanks,
Tom
