My apologies for some errors and omissions in my reply "Re: George Canning and
Viscount Canning", which I will now correct and amend. (The source for all
corrections and amendments are taken from *The Complete Peerage*, 2nd edition, 2000,
except where noted.)
First item:
- for "Stratford Canning, of Garvagh, county Londonderry, Ireland, married Abigail
Stratford, Their son was Stratford Canning; he too was from Garvagh. This Stratford had
three sons (eldest to youngest): George Canning (who died in his father's lifetime in
1771), Paul Canning (d. 1784), and Stratford Canning (d. 1787)."
- read "George Canning, of Garvagh, county Londonderry, Ireland, married Abigail
Stratford. They had (at least) one son, Stratford (?1703-1775) [Source for dates: from an
email I recently received.]; he too was from Garvagh. This Stratford married Letitia
Newburgh (?1717-1786). [Source for spouse and her dates: from an email I recently
received.] They had three sons (eldest to youngest): George Canning (who died in his
father's lifetime in 1771), Paul Canning (d. 1784), and Stratford Canning (1744-1787).
[Source for his date of birth: from an email I recently received.]"
Second item:
- for "Prime Minister Canning's youngest uncle, Stratford Canning (d. 1787)
married Mehitabel, daughter of Robert Patrick of Somerville, county Dublin, Ireland. Their
4th and youngest son was Stratford Canning. He was created Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe
in 1852, and was a famous ambassador and great gentleman. He died without any surviving
issue in 1880, which makes another line of Cannings extinct."
- read "Prime Minister Canning's youngest uncle, Stratford Canning (1744-1787)
married Mehitabel, daughter of Robert Patrick of Somerville, county Dublin, Ireland. Their
4th and youngest son was Stratford Canning (1786-1880). He was created Viscount Stratford
de Redcliffe in 1852, and was a famous ambassador and great gentleman. Lord Stratford
married (1) 1816 Harriet Raikes (who died without issue in 1817). He married (2) 1825
Eliza Charlotte Alexander (1805-1882) [Source for Eliza's date of birth: from an email
I recently received], by whom he had an only son and heir apparent, George Stratford
Canning (1832-1878, unmarried). Although CP, Vol. XII/1, pp 365-366 does not specifically
mention it, Lord Stratford and his 2nd wife had three surviving daughters, who died
"unmarried and without known issue". [Source: from an email I recently
received.] This line of Cannings, that is, issued from the 1st Viscount Stratford de
Redcliffe, is presumably extinct. The line of Cannings !
from Stratford Canning by his wife Mehitabel Patrick is not extinct because "their
daughter Elizabeth [...] Canning [...] married George Henry Barnett [...] and thereby has
today lots of descendants." [Source: from an email I recently received.]
