Dear Simon
According to my data, Goerge Canning who was briefly British Prime Minister in 1827 had
four children. Of those four, three were sons. However, only one of the sons appears
to have lived beyond early adulthood and had children of his own. This was Charles John
Canning 1812 - 1862. He was a succesful servant of the British Empire and was appointed
governor General of India in 1855. Is this your ancestor? Or do you (like me) descend
from one of the cousins of the PM. Or does the Prime Minister have other descendants
that I didn't yet know about? (My own Canning ancestor was Elizabeth Canning 1777 -
1838.) If your grandfather's given names included Stratford or George, that
increases the possibility of a link to this branch of Cannings, though of course that is a
somewhat circumstantial approach to the matter. Any which way, I'd be interested to
know if you have any firmer data on your nineteenth century Canning ancestors, to see if I
can fit it into the!
larger puzzle.
Best wishes
Charles
