Fred Dittmar and I compared notes before on Cannings who ended up in
Plymouth County, MA.
I am in Riverview, NB, Canada and also have Canning on my mother's side. My
Cannings were for many years [some still are] in the Cumberland County area
of Nova Scotia. There are other pockets of Cannings in Digby County [Fred's
crowd] and in Queens County, NS. I believe that they are all connected to
some brothers who came to Halifax, NS during its founding in 1749. Their
surname was spelled CANNON at that time. They were from Ireland.
There was a Thomas Cannon with 4 "male servants" on board the Cornwallis
founding ship "Baltimore" in 1749. As well by 1750 there was a William
Cannon who was operated a tavern in Halifax [has to be
my cousin!!!!]. My family comes from George Cannon who mustered out of the
British Army and returned to settle in Halifax in 1759 [after the Battle of
Quebec].
My Cannons moved from Halifax to Falmouth, Kings County, NS then on to
Cumberland County. I believe, sans proof, that the other pockets of
Cannings were begat by William, Thomas, James and another brother. The
names Charles & John show up in several families of the late 1750s as does
the name Frederick.
Anyway, that's who I am and what I do here in New Brunswick.
Thanks for listening...good luck to Fred...
