Dear Audrey
I'm a little vague about the geography of the outer fringes of South
London, but I know of a family which might turn out to be your fiancé's .
My
principal sources - starting points anyhow - are the 1861 census and the
1881 census. My interest was triggered because one of their sons was named
Stratford Canning and I was wondering if I could find a link to well
publicised diplomat
Stratford Canning 1786 - 1880 or indeed to my own ancestor Stratford Canning
ca. 1744 - 1787. I didn't - at least not yet - but I nonetheless highlight
here what I do have. If it looks 'likely' you can no doubt build on this.
William Canning born Chelsea ca 1821 married Mary Ann Curteis born Clapham
(though one census said she was born Chelsea like her husband) ca. 1823.
In the 1861 census William Canning's occupation is given as chemist and
druggist. By
1881 his occupation is given as book and print seller, and that is also the
occupation, in 1881, of three sons still living with their parents.
In the 1861 census their address is 173 Sloane Street, Chelsea (today part
of London as you probably know better than I)
You'll see (below) that the birth of one of their children took place in
1850, according to registration details, at another Chelsea location.
In the 1881 census their address is 285 Camberwell Road, Camberwell (quite
close to Peckham, methinks)
These two had several children including:
George Canning born ca. 1849 maybe at Chelsea
William Curteis Canning born 2 April 1850 First Street, St Luke, Chelsea
Charles C Canning born ca. 1852 maybe Chelsea.
Bookseller living with parents in 1881
Francis L Canning born ca. 1855 maybe Chelsea
Grace Canning born ca. 1859 maybe Chelsea
Ada Canning born ca. 1860 maybe Chelsea
Living with parents still in 1881
Arthur F Canning born ca. 1863 maybe Ashford, Kent
Bookseller living with parents still in 1881
Stratford Canning born 24 November 1864 3 Upper Portland Place, Kennington
Book seller living with parents still in 1881
The only one of these children on whom I have further information is
Stratford Canning 1864 - ?. He, on 14 November 1889 at St James's,
Camberwell married Annie Hoyes (then aged about 21) daughter to Robert
Hoyes.
By now, from the given names and the places mentioned, you may have a
clearer idea than I do whether any of these looks likely to be your
fiancé's ancestor. If it looks hopeful, you might think it worth trying to
track the boys' marriages and the births of any resulting children using
http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/ that is
http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl . The project is making good
progress with filling in the gaps in the nineteenth century portions of the
database, and data for the first decade of the twentieth now seems to be
building nicely.
I wish you success.
Of course, should this be your line, and should you ever identify the
parents of William Canning born Chelsea ca. 1821, I'd love to know more.
Sincerely
Charles Hillman
