Thanks for the reply James
Looks like this could be the one. Not much is known about this branch of the family as it
was kept quiet for some reason.
Alfred is my great grandfather but as to when he came to Australia is still uncertain.
I've gleaned from my father as much as he knows but it is somewhat limited. He was a
champagne salesman here in Victoria. I have searched the 1881 English census and found an
Alfred Canney living in London who is listed as a wine merchant clerk so this fits.
My fathers aunt (Alfred's daughter) went to England in the early 1930s and went to
stay with "Aunt Millie" in Ramsgate but this is all my father knows.
Alfred had 4 children in Australia. My grandmother was the eldest, born in 1896.
Apparently he left Australia when the children were quite young and returned to England
where he died. I'm not sure whether his return to England was permanent or not but I
hear his wife was a very unpleasant woman who never remarried and lived a very lonely
existance until she died while in her 90s. A good reason
not to return perhaps?
I have found a cemetery record of Alfred Canney at St Lawrence, Ramgate who was interred
on 22/12/1914 aged 52. His last abode was 19 Penshurst rd Ramsgate. This fits as I heard
he died while staying with his sister. I plan on checking this out in July when I over
there.
Cheers
