There are certainly a lot of Cannells and the Norfolk ones do more than most families to
vary the spelling!
The Ketteringham baptismal register shows a baptism on 14 September 1836 - "Eliza or
Elizabeth" parents "John and Mary Canham or Cannell". Clearly they were
catering for all options. The father is and under bailiff but I can't read the
location, and the mother's maiden name is not given.
There is also a baptism of Anne daughter of John Canham and Susanna, late Basingwhite,
spinster, on 5 December 1819. This fits the age and birthplace of Ann Doe as recorded in
the 1861 census. Anne's eldest brother John was baptised 27 Jan 1802 (John was the
first of 10 children over 25 years)
My Cannell ancestors also became Canhams from time to time, though less often than the
Ketteringham branch (they were in the Swainsthorpe/Cringleford area and must be related
but I haven't found a link)
I'm sceptical about the Isle of Man/Norfolk link for two reasons: there have been
Cannells well inland in Norfolk since the fifteenth century, and I have also encountered a
"3 brothers" story in my wife's ancestry, this one in Scotland concerning
the Drysdale family with rough dating and much circumstantial detail, all demonstrably
false. I'd be happy to be proved wrong if anyone can give the source of the Cannell
story - I could do with a few ancestors who don't come from Norfolk.
