I'm afraid this is likely to muddy the waters rather than add to the sum of human
knwoledge, but here goes..
Thomas Cannell, blacksmith, married Mary Coppin, daughter of Peter the Rector of East
Carleton, on 30 April 1710, he obtained a licence for the marriage the day before, giving
his place of residence as Forncett St Mary. They had 3 children in Forncett by 1715, then
6 more in East Carleton from 1718.
The general assumption is that Thomas was baptised 28 March 1692 in Swardeston, son of
James; although 18 would be young for a man to marry, Swardeston is only about 3 miles
from East Carleton.
However I have also found a marrriage licence for a marriage between Thomas Cannell,
blacksmith of Swardeston, to Ann Saull of Swardeston, dated 29 Sep 1716, with James
Cannell (presumably his father) as one of the guarantors. Thomas's age is 22, which
fits the baptismal date.
I can't find a record of the Cannell/Saull marriage - the licence stipulates
Swardeston or Heigham for the wedding. I suppose Thomas might have tried a spot of
bigamy, but it seems unlikely within easy walking distance of his in-laws. It seems more
likely that two Thomas Cannells were working as blacksmiths in the same area. There was a
Thomas born to William and Mary Cannell in Hethersett in 1687; no evidence that he's
the same person, but at least the name was around.
Any input will be welcome, whether it supports my ideas or destroys them. At present it
just seems I've moved the brickwall closer.
