*** Active Virus warning - Action required
A new virus has appeared today. The virus is W32/Bugbear-A
Preliminary description at:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32bugbeara.html and other vendor
sites
It was identified today, so you will need to have the *very latest* virus >
identities/library from your anti-virus software vendor. The infected
messages look very genuine, so be very cautious about opening any attachment
or message which looks suspicious. Scan first and confirm with the sender
before opening.
Up date your virus protection NOW before you do anything else! HOWEVER -
the virus is very, very new and it may be that some protecters have not >
caught up with it yet. If this is the case, be extra vigilant, open no
attachments and try to update again tomorrow. Do check NOW thugh!
~~~~~ Here is some general advice on ANTI-VIRUS precautions
Anti-virus protection is YOUR responsibility. It is the duty of every
internet user to have adequate anti-virus protection. Before you use this
mailing list you must have done all these three things:
FIRST: Install a good virus protection package and check at least once a
week for updates to the virus library provided by the vendor. Some packages
can be set to check automatically for new updates.
SECOND: Next time you go on-line, download the latest security patches from
Microsoft. One way of doing this is to open Internet Explorer, go online,
then go to the Tools Windows Update menu. Select and run the critical
updates. Some of you may choose to use a different email reader (e.g.
Eudora, Pegasus) or a different operating system (e.g. Linux).
THIRD: About attachments...
Don't SEND attachments to individuals without asking or warning them first.
Ask what format they prefer. (Word, plain text, etc).
Don't OPEN or READ email attachments without checking with the sender that
the message is genuine. Even if it someone you know. Some viruses can be
activated simply by viewing or opening the message. So keep your anti-virus
software and security patches up-to-date.
We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some
are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors...but they all
have to learn to live in the same box.
