Hello David et al:
The "Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers," Cecil Humphery-Smith,
editor (Chichester, West Sussex: Phillimore & Co. Ltd., 1995) places Bristol
in Gloucestershire, very close to the border of Somerset.
An 1831 Gazetteer of England places it "between counties of Gloucs and
Somerset."
I believe Avon classifies as a River not a place. However, the same
Gazetteer did show a "chapelry parish" of Avon in Wiltshire with a
population of 26 souls.
Hope this helps.
Wilfred

Cath,
Okay, now you REALLY have me confused (nothing new these days). I show
Bristol in my listings as "Bristol, Avon, England," and it supposedly came
from a pretty reliable source. Now you are saying that it is in Somerset,
but that one other source says Gloucester, so I am lost. I am going to go
back and take another look at my original source, but if you can confirm
for me the correct location of Bristol, England I would appreciate it.
