Judy,
First of all, I want to welcome you to the list. I am also Administrator
of the Cann board on RootsWeb as well, and I invite you to visit both of
them often. I hope you find the information you are looking for, and find
some information on your ancestors as well.
As for research in Canada, I am surprised you are having any difficulty
finding information there, because I have about 1,300+ Cann surnames in my
data and a major portion of them came from Nova Scotia and present day New
England. Add to that number their spouses and children with different
surnames, and you have quite a family. I have traced my Cann line back to
Sir Thomas Cann, Lord Mayor of Bristol, England, whom I show as born "abt
1565," and I am descended from his son Sir William, also Lord Mayor of
Bristol.
Sir Thomas' other son was Rev. John Cann, who seems to have been the
"rebel" of the family, even though a minister and man of God. He supported
the Cromwells during the period when they overthrew the monarchy, but later
found himself in serious trouble when the monarchy returned to the throne
and burned him at the stake as a heretic.
You will find my information at the following location, if you want to take
a look at it:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~decann/genealogy/master/
I will be happy to share anything I have with you.
Again, I welcome you to the list, and I hope you find some intormation and
meet some new friends here. Please do not hesitate contacting me at any
time. I welcome hearing from you.
David

Hello,
I have joined the list in hopes of someone recognizing any of my
ancestors.
In the archives there was a posting by Kathleen that I would like to
repeat, regarding John & Mary ? Cann, born when ? and where ? They did
have 9 children (Ann, John, Mary, Peggy, William, Bella, Lewis,
Charlotte, Priscilla) all born in Launcells, Cornwall from 1810 to 1832
and then they disappear.
>From distant relatives and research, I do know that son, William married
Elizabeth Gregory born ? where ? married ?, and they had 6 children
(James Lewis, John, Henry, Mary Ann, Edwin and Eliza Jane) born from
1845 to 1863. Edwin is my ggrandfather and he was born in Clark
Township, County Durham, Ontario and later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Where the others were born, married, died is a mystery.
It is difficult obtaining information especially on the Canadian side.
Any info, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It seems even the
basic facts (to assure that I am requesting and paying for the correct
birth, death, marriage certificates) is unavailable. Am I looking in
the wrong places, or is Canada closed to research.
(BTW, I am Canadian)!
Thanks for letting me carry on.
Judy
