Like most of you, I sometimes come across something or someone in my
genealogy research that I want to share with others, and that has just
happened. I have met a lot of very nice people through my genealogy, some
relatives and some not, and I am now going to tell you all about one of the
nice ones.
George B. Cann is my third cousin, living in Canada. I had never heard of
him until a few years ago, but he was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia where
most of my line of Canns originated. He now lives in Sarnia, Ontario, but
now that he is retired after 38 years with the same company, he finds the
time to return to Yarmouth to do genealogy research, among other things.
He is also fascinated by the sea, the ships that are on the sea, as well as
the people who operated them, many of whom were named Cann.
George has now written a book about "the Cann ships," that includes a great
many of our ancestors, if you are of the same line as I am. Some were ship
owners, some ship builders, some very wealthy and some not, some were
common deck hands, but they all followed the sea. And yes, sadly enough,
some of them even went down with those very same ships to a watery grave.
The book will be released this summer, but I have just found out that if
anyone would like to order an advanced copy, orders will be accepted at a
discount if the order is received by June 1, 2002.
I point out the RootsWeb policy regarding advertising on the lists, and I
normally frown upon it as well, but this is one case that I think might be
of topical interest to many of you. Following is the information I
recently received from George, and please note that the cost indicated is
IN CANADIAN DOLLARS, and if you decide to order an advanced copy of his
book, it will have to be in a bank check or money order payable in Canadian
dollars. Here in the USA, that is to our advantage, though, because thanks
to the current conversion rate, the cost to us is about 15 or 20 percent
less in our dollars.
FOR RELEASE MID 2002
WEST NOVA "SHIPS" AND THEIR MEN - THE CANN BOATS
Learn about Western Nova Scotia's seafaring history as experienced by the
descendants of a New England family who moved to Nova Scotia in the late
1700's and were directly involved with ships and the sea for over 140
years.
The Cann families of Western N. S. included 70 people who were vessel
builders, sea captains, vessel owners, ordinary seamen, and below the deck
marine engineers. Some of their association with over 300 vessels is
shared by other families of the area, particularly in the counties of
Yarmouth, Shelburne, and Digby. In the days of steam, Cann boats serviced
communities on both sides of the Bay of Fundy and extended all the way to
the Straits of Canso in northern Nova Scotia.
Retail price IN CANADIAN DOLLARS for this 350 page hard covered book (incl.
60+ illustrations) is to be $45 [plus $10 shipping and handling]. However,
a prepaid order for $40 [plus $10 shipping and handling] sent to the
address below prior to June 1, 2002 will reserve your copy.
*Note: No outside assistance has been received to defray the costs of this
book.

George has not asked me to do this, I am doing it on my own because I think
some of you may be interested in this information, but I did get George's
permission to do it, since it involves his address and phone number. If
you are interested, please contact George directly, not me. I am looking
forward to seeing this book when it comes out this summer.
