To all subscribers of the Markley and Cann surname lists on RootsWeb,
Please allow me to wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year in
2002. May you find all the happiness and prosperity you seek in everything
that you do throughout the coming new year.
I have administered the Cann list for about three months now, and the
Markley list for perhaps half that time, and it is very much "a learning
experience" with me. Those of you on the Cann list have heard me state
that I am going to take care of "a few administrative matters" and then try
to spur some activity on the list, but I am afraid I have not done very
well in that respect on either list. Unfortunately, I sometimes have a
tendency toward procrastination, but an unexpected trip to the hospital
before Christmas did not help a lot.
With 2002 about to arrive (here in the USA, but it has already arrived for
those of you in Australia and New Zealand), I have made a "new year
resolution" to once and for all stop my procrastination and make a more
serious effort toward getting some activity going on both lists. If any of
you have any suggestions, I welcome them at any time. I want the lists to
be YOUR lists, and I will need your ideas and suggestions in order to
accomplish that.
To start with, I will need to finally take care of a few administrative
matters that I said I would do in the beginning. This includes adding some
things to the welcome page, the list taglines, and other related things,
but will also include some "housecleaning" matters as well, such as:
1. I have printed out a list of subscribers, and I note that some of you
are listed TWICE, either to the "list" version or to the "digest"
version,
and in one or two cases, some of you are subscribed to both. I do not know
if you are actually receiving duplicate postings or not, but I will remove
your name to where everyone is listed only ONCE.
2. Both lists are very quiet, with perhaps one or two postings per month.
. . . . if that much. For this reason, I am going to "unsubscribe"
everyone currently receiving the "digest" and subscribe them to the
"list."
This will actually work to your advantage, because you will still get one
posting at a time, since that is all the activity we ever have, but you
will receive it as an individual message immediately after it is sent,
rather than twelve hours later. When I start doing this, you will begin to
receive some unexpected "unsubscribe" and "subscribe" notices from
the
computer, but there is no need for alarm unless you find that you are not
receiving your postings any more. If you have any questions, please do not
hesitate contacting me at any time. I will be happy to check the
subscriber's list and verify your subscription. My private e-mail address
is in the signature below, or you can post it to the list if it is
something of general interest.
Those are my first concerns, but I will keep you posted on others as they
come up. In the meantime, I will be posting some of my own information to
the list in the hopes of spurring some of you to do likewise. My goal is
to help put a little more activity into both lists, so please help me by
sharing information with fellow subscribers. For your information,
RootsWeb is currently "weeding out" some of the inactive lists, so I am
asking for your help to make sure the Cann and Markley lists are not among
those lost forever.
Again, my best wishes to you all for a blessed and prosperous new year
2002. If any of you have the inclination to do so, I welcome hearing from
you on or off the list at any time. God bless.
David
